Biography
NIEVE
Mortichnia "It is not the way of the Wild to like movement. Life is an offense to it, for life is movement; and the Wild aims always to destroy movement." - Jack London winter walk Though the freshly-fallen snow was still powdery and soft, Nieve's feet did not disturb so much as a single snowflake as she made her way through the forest. Above her, afternoon light filtered through the trees, deceivingly bright, considering how cold it was. The forest was unnaturally quiet, even the wind seeming to hold still for fear of breaking the silence. The woods were always like this after a storm, all life seeming to disappear once the blizzard cleared. Not all life. A hare, startled by her movement, bolted from its hiding place, kicking up a flurry of snow in its wake. She watched it run away, heart beating a little faster in surprise. Having not noticed its presence, the hare had spooked her just as much as she had spooked it. She chided herself for not paying more attention, but then again, she wasn't as attuned to the energies of the living. Nieve continued deeper into the forest, where the trees grew thicker and less sunlight managed to pierce all the way through to the ground below. The hare had been the apparent exception, as she encountered no other life besides herself. It was several hours before she found what she was looking for. The sun had already begun to set, tinting the snow orange and pink, highlighting the irregular shapes buried beneath. She hopped up onto a log for more sure footing, walking across it to the largest of the snow-covered lumps. A minute's digging uncovered the still head of a coatl. She pressed a paw to the dragon's forehead and found it as cold as the ice around it. With its eyes closed, it appeared to be merely sleeping. "You're not alone anymore." Nieve curled up against the coatl's side, tucked securely against their frozen feathers. She watched the sun sink below the horizon, the glimmer of stars starting to shine through the canopy above. Nieve nudged the coatl next to her with her nose. "It's time to go." Something flickered deep within the coatl's chest, uncurling itself like a hatchling from an egg. Nieve waited for the coatl to regain its feet, standing and watching her in confusion. They were always confused, at first. She beckoned for them to follow, and they did, uncertainly. The light that had flickered in them suddenly bloomed, a ribbon of colors that were stunning against the night sky. The first aurora borealis of winter. The coatl was no longer uncertain, unfurling their wings to follow the light. They stopped, once, to look back at her, and she smiled, encouraging. "Go." She watched the lights for a bit, then looked back at the body still buried beneath the snow. "Be at peace." |
