Biography
________ |
The Nightwatch clan’s death seekers were elite spies wrapped in enigma, or, in Amethyst’s grumbling opinion, nothing but a conspiracy of overglorified magpies. Trinkets disappeared from the vault. Trinkets fell from the ceiling. Trinkets plundered from all across the land littered the floor at an inconvenient time of the morning, angled just right to poke an unsuspecting ground-nesting dragon up the foot. Indeed, the pearlcatcher often complained to Eerie that her death seekers would even stoop as low as stealing his pearl if their grabby talons weren’t thwarted by its flawless (he couldn’t stress enough) roundness. Eerie nodded with a queenly air of solemnity. Unbeknown to the disgruntled treasurer, she had the optimal view to see a trio of particularly determined birds attempting to do just that; its weight taxed them. That morning seemed no different. Daybreak poured through the fog. Crookshanks was rolling in a pile of trinkets that had amassed overnight. It was the usual fare. Jewels. Pendants. Little pieces of apparel. Sliding the Crookshanks backwards from the shiny objects by the tail, Amethyst pinned the tiny imperial under his foot - like a pearl - to keep her out of his way while he sifted through the ill-gotten goods to reclaim whatever had been lifted from the vault. Partially squished under Amethyst’s talons, the undeterred Crookshanks swatted wildly at his majestic whiskers. As layers of glittering trinkets sluiced away, Amethyst found something that gave him pause: A silver locket. He brought his head closer to examine it. Big as a fae, it was, and shaped to resemble a heart, bejeweled with rose quartz. No string. Probably slipped off the neck of a wealthy imperial, or a ridgeback… or snatched from them. Forgetting Crookshanks was there, Amethyst promptly sat on her, staring at this beautifully intricate piece of jewelry. He cocked his head and squinted. The shimmering facets glimpsed, hypnotic, almost as though the trinket was shifting. Crookshanks, who only managed to pop her head and forelimbs free, squeaked demandingly. That’s when the locket’s halves slid away, unveiling a pair of glowing pink eyes. Amethyst jerked back with a snort, utterly shocked and afraid. He slipped on Crookshanks and sprawled in a most undignified way. The locket – no, not a locket; a silver fae – stared ahead impassively as its rose quartz wings froze in an elegant spread, like a jeweled brooch. Its stillness was uncanny. Amethyst collected himself off the floor, cautiously looking left and right to reassure himself there were no witnesses. “You there,” he said, trying to sound stern, “what is your name?” The pretty fae remained expressionless, still as a million-treasure statue. Amethyst tried a different approach. “How did you sneak past our patrol?” he demanded, painfully aware that one half of the so-called patrol was currently dangling off the end of his whisker with saucer-like eyes. Silence. “Was your sleep interrupted by a flock of magpie-brained birds abducting you from your nest because they thought you were a trinket?” Silence. Oh, Gladekeeper be good, it's another one, Amethyst thought, memory circling to the main cause of the death seeker infestation. Don’t say this one talks to glowing pocket mice; I beg of you! Crookshanks slid off his whisker and plopped onto the floor with a squeak. | ________ |
Locket
An emergency meeting was held when an inanimate dragon mysteriously appeared in Death Seeker’s Roost, seemingly deposited there by Eerie’s They named him Locket, for what Amethyst mistook him for when his wings were folded in. Since then, through several nights of research at the Library, the dragons of the Nightwatch clan dug deep into his mystery. Locket belongs to a subspecies known as jewelry box fae. His body, frills and wings are made of precious silver, and rose-pink jewels. It’s quite possible he came to life within the castle, given the strong ley line of magic that charges the ground. Locket has never been spotted flying or walking, but can be found in a different location every morning. He seems to enjoy being admired and complimented. Other than that, he mostly stays in place, inanimate as the jewelry he was born from. On occasion, a bigger dragon picks him up and wears him for a bit. This he also seems to like, as he wraps around the dragon like a glittering accessory. His official role within the clan is daytime sentinel. Mostly because 'sentient trinket' was a tad too whimsical. |
Allies
Amethyst shows a measure of protectiveness towards him, although it’s difficult to tell if this comes from him being the one to ‘discover’ the jeweled fae, or the fact that he technically belongs in the vault. Crookshanks is easily distracted by him. He is, in her eyes, the Ultimate Shiny Thing™. Despite the daily barrage of swatting, batting and stealth attacks, he doesn’t mind being designated as the Ultimate Napping Surface™ afterwards. Frightening takes him to Blooming Grove every day while gathering his herbs and flowers, wearing him coiled around his neck like an intricate shawl. Sometimes, they stay there all day. They seem bonded.
Familiar
When Locket went with Frightening to the Auction House to stock up on leopard coralclimber toxin, they came home with a smitten Rhodochrosite Crane instead. Reportedly, it honked at them until they adopted it. Amethyst was less than sympathetic about the loss of three thousand treasure involved. animated arcane flag by juunebugs free-to-use chibi lineart by Lestyn seeker eye recolor by Jerepasaurus watch recolor by NamedDame other item recolors by Ranuja story and chibi colouring by me |
