Job: Oracle's bodyguard

Every Guardian must come to terms with the fact that their Search may kill them. For every dragon that successfully finds their Charge, there is one lost to time, vanished without a trace. Their families stop receiving letters, their friends stop hearing of their exploits, and their Charge goes through the world lost, missing a piece they never knew they had. It would be more of a tragedy if anyone ever heard about it, but such are the perils of going missing; in a land as large as Sornieth, it's hard to say if someone is well and truly lost, or simply does not wish to be found.

In Dankim's case, however, he was found when he least expected it, and when he most needed it. Born to a clan living on the fringes of the Tangled Wood, he had not spent long in the Shadowbinder's realm. Despite his young age, there was a fierce longing for his Charge nestled between his ribs, and it burned too brightly to ignore. There could be no waiting for Dankim, not once he understood the nature of the pull in his chest. Throwing caution to the wind, he hurtled southward in his quest for fulfillment, desperate to soothe the fire raging in his heart.

Crossing through the Tidelord's domain was the fastest way to reach the Ashfall Waste, where Dankim was almost certain his Charge awaited. Why else would the urge to embark on his Search feel so much like a wildfire, roaring to almost to the point of burning him down? To him, that pain, that insatiable urge was a hint, direction send from the deities to bless his path forward. He could not afford to lose time ignoring their mysterious wisdom, nor could he bear the thought of his Charge moving on because he dawdled in his travels.

All action and impulse, Dankim failed to prepare properly for the sweltering heat of the Ashfall Waste. If the port where he arrived seemed too hot to bear, than the trek inland, following that sixth sense all Guardians are blessed with, was beyond bearable. For the first day or two, he bore the heat proudly, making use of what little advice he'd bothered to glean before setting out (along with advice thrust upon him by dragons who saw the danger in his quest). But he was born to the cool glades of the Tangled Wood, with little tolerance for volcanic temperatures, and the environment slowly wore him down. Hour by hour, he felt himself flagging, each step failing to take him as far as the last while simultaneously requiring all the more effort. Waypoints grew scarce, lava flows rushed by, and with every blink, the world fell under a darker, smokier haze.

He does not know precisely when the Dark-Blood envoy discovered him, nor how long it took to reach Magmatic Flux. And the gods only know that he has not dwelt on how they moved his body, heavy and weak as it was.

Yet the mercantile efforts of Clan Dark-Blood saved his life. They ferried him to their destination, where the local healers could treat his burns and withered lungs with practiced efficiency, and then they bore him out of the flame, back into the night where he was born. The Search remained open all this time, but the heat that had fueled Dankim so far was no longer a blaze. It was much more like a flickering hearth, the kind that burns low and steady all through the night, and it did not object to following Clan Dark-Blood into the future.

In the end, it brought Dankim exactly where he needed to be. Years passed before he knew it, but when Absinthe staggered into the clan with dire warning on her tongue, he knew where he belonged. Throughout her recovery, he assisted in meeting the oracle's every need, sometimes to the point of driving the healers' to their wits' end. But this was his Charge, found at long last, and he would not be parted. He nearly died in order to reach her, and to step back now would be an insult to everything he'd experienced.

Not long after Absinthe's recovery, though, she began to complain of Dankim always hovering over her, keeping an eye out for dangers that did not exist. She quite liked him as her official guard, given that he didn't seem skeptical nor wary of her powers of prophecy, but the hovering put quite a damper on official oracular business. In compromise, Dankim offered to keep his post as her guard, but to seek out a Ridgeback scroll in order to dispel the Guardian's instincts that were straining their relationship.

Now, though, he takes his duties to his Charge with a different manner of seriousness. The instinct to protect Absinthe is not entirely quashed, partly because of his long years as a Guardian, and partly because they are now mates. However, his hovering is more relaxed, and often directed at other members of Clan Dark-Blood. When there is petty drama in the clan, Dankim is sure to be the first to know. He claims that knowing all the clan business will better protect Absinthe, but she knows the truth: it's quite entertaining for him to know why the hatchling mothers are squabbling today, and what pranks the young ones intend to pull tomorrow.

Sometimes, that knowledge even means he gets to join in, and the next time Absinthe finds a Greatshell rotting outside her lair, she's going to foresee Dankim getting a scolding strong enough to peel his scales off, just before she gives it to him.
