Dax paused for a moment and came to a decision. There were reasons to stay - always - but on this occasion, much as he wanted to, he could not. News had just been filtered through from allies of another site for exploration and he could scarce keep his excitement to himself. He almost ignored Summer when she sidled up to him.

"You're going?"

It sounded almost like an accusation and Dax was tempted not to respond. He liked Summer; he really did, but... Flaring his ear fans, he gave her a short nod and shook out his wings. "I have to."

"No," she growled, "you don't."

"Well..." Dax floundered helplessly, searching for a suitable reply and then it came to him. "You could always come with me."

Summer stared, her eyes, blue as sea, filled with hope.

"Why not," he said, and Calico purred in his ear in total agreement.
