ICEBORN

NATURE ALIGNED
Sindile was a peaceful giant. Or he would have been if he had been born in a different time. His birth had been closely followed by a great battle, the Battle of the Bay, where the flights Wind and Arcane fought to lay claim to the river that divides their territories. They called upon the other flights for assistance and Sindile’s parents had offered their hatchlings to the highest bidder. Sindile and his siblings were groomed and taught basic fighting skills before being set off to the auction house. The auction house was nothing like anything he’d seen before. There were stages where dragons displayed themselves for sale telling what skills they possessed that would benefit the clan that bought them. However, the space that could fit hundreds of dragons at once was manly empty. Some dragons dressed in armor commanded dragons and purchased dragons by the dozens. There were two groups of dragons there, and each stayed as far away from each other as possible. Casting hostile looks at each other like bitter enemies. Sindile realized the two groups were the warring flights buying and organizing new recruits. Sindile and his siblings made their way to the stage and were stopped short by an armored dragon displaying the Arcane flight symbol.

“You there, you look like good soldiers. I’ll offer you 8 thousand for each of you to join our army.”

Sindile barely had time to think when another armored dragon approached from the other side, this one displaying the Wind emblem.

“Hold it right there, they haven’t even gotten on stage yet!” The newcomer growled.

“So? There is no rule against this,” The arcane dragon shot back with a deadly glare.

“Fine then. I’ll offer you 10 thousand each,” He said, addressing the siblings.

“12 thousand.”
“13 thousand.”
The rivaling dragons shot increasing numbers back and forth.
“Fine! 100 thousand for all three!” The Wind dragon flared, pulling a sack out of his satchel and dropping it in front of the bewildered siblings. The Arcane dragon narrowed his eyes, his tongue slithering in and out in hatred. He had been out-bidden. “You won’t win this battle. All you Wind scum have is money on your side. We will claim StarBay!” He shouted, turning his back on the other dragons and walking back to his mini army.

After being sold away to a strong and wild Wind clan, Sindile trained with their strongest generals to become a vicious and bloodthirsty fighter. It was never what he’d planned for his life, but it was where he was, and he was determined to make the best of it.

Sindile soon became one of the strongest and most sought-after fighters in the clan he’d been sold into. His strength matched nothing else the other dragons had ever seen. He was strong, true, but he was also one of the most intelligent dragons in the clan. Some of the others feared him, for they knew not his true power.
After spending some time with the Wind clan, Sindile grew tired of the war. He was sick of fighting. Now was the time to run, to start afresh in a new clan of his own choosing. His entire life, he’d been forced into places, “families” he never felt a part of, clans that were disjointed and unfamiliar. This time, he swore to himself that it would be different. This time, he’d love the place he lived.

So, after many nights of tedious planning and sneaking around, Sindile finally found a place he wanted to live. He’d planned his escape; now was the time to execute it. He’d prepared everything; a sleeping mat, food for a month or two, every shiny thing he owned or had found on the floor. He could definitely sell the trinkets for treasure if he needed to, or trade them for food with some other dragons.

Sindile silently packed his things and was prepared to leave the clan for good, forever. However, just when he was about to leave, he noticed another dragon sneaking around the edges of the camp. It was Griffin, a headstrong and beautiful dragoness who had come to be his closest friend. Oh, how could he forget her? He should’ve known to bring her with him if she wanted. She was no happier in the Wind clan than he was. In fact, they were both miserable and had bonded over that fact.

He approached her silently, and when she noticed him, he mouthed the words “be quiet”. She nodded, uncertain of what he wanted. But then, she saw his packed bags and her eyes grew wide. She’d realized his plan. Careful not to wake the others, Sindile whispered to Griffin, “Come with me. We’ll start a new life together. It’ll be better than this, I promise.” Maybe she saw the pleading in his eyes and realized what she wanted. Maybe she was just desperate to escape. Whatever the case might’ve been, it was the greatest day of Sindile’s life. He was escaping from the clutches of war with the dragon he loved, and that was all that mattered.

They fled together, running away as fast as they could. Running from problems, from war, famine, and misery. They were running away from the past swiftly into the future. Sindile and Griffin escaped into the night, never to be seen again by the Wind clan. They fled through the open, windy countryside, all the way across the continent of Sornieth.

They were exhausted from their travels, weary and slow-footed. They were ready to stop running. They’d traveled a long way, and it was time to settle down. Sindile and his mate had ended up in the forests of the Viridian Labyrinth. They were rescued by a large Nocturne male, and joined his Nature clan in the forest, where they finally could be happy.
