"Don't trust words, trust actions"

Thalassa is a ruthless pirate who spent many years fine tuning her skills on the open ocean off the coast of the sunbeam ruins. Her and her small crew of six could take on any larger boat and still come out victorious, stealing away with more wealth than they could ever need. One day, one of her crew members betrayed them all, sending her boat to the bottom of the sea and her crew to their deaths. She barely made it out with her life, and the knowledge of where she hid all her treasure that to this day, she only knows.

Thalassa came to the windswept plateau to learn about the flying ships which could house an entire clan. She wanted to be able to master the building and flying of one so she could rebuild her crew and set sail again with only those who she truly trusts at her side. Soon she hopes to sail back and reclaim all her lost loot, perhaps to share with this clan she now considers friends. I wish

The sun glittered sharply off the water, refracting in the spray and sending tiny shards of rainbows in every direction. Thalassa stood just above the tide-line, relishing the feel of the sand on her claws rather than the soft, salt-pitted wood of the her ship's deck. From her vantage point she could just make out the carved figurehead of the ship jutting out beyond the mouth of the cove. The Morning Star's sails were furled, but when released they would shine, golden and gleaming in the harsh ocean sun. She smiled savagely.

The sound of wood snapping brought her back to earth. She whipped around, examining her crew as they sorted and stacked the chests, barrels, sacks and other miscellaneous carrying devices that held their most recent spoils. The treasure was staggering; the ballast stones has been tossed overboard from the Morning Star to counteract the weight and still she rode low in the water as they anchored at this tiny cove. Thalassa grinned even wider, knowing that the vessel that once possessed these treasures now lay growing corals at the bottom of the great sea. Her crew shuffled amongst the chests, Floe marking contents on a long scroll of parchment and Hades directing the organization. Behind them, in the darkness provided by a rocky overhang, Ty and Anrach dug furiously in the sand. Nathaniel had been the source of the sound, and he crouched among the ruins of a rotten wooden crate.

"Nathaniel?" Thalassa called, peering over her crew at the Pearlcatcher. He frantically sifted through the crate's contents, growing more and more feverish as his claws met glass and stone spheres packed tightly in excelsior.

"no pearl no pearl no pearl" he murmured to himself as Thalassa approached. Gently she laid a claw on his shoulder and he jerked, glancing up at her as the fervor faded from his eyes.

"No luck?" she asked, softly. He shook his head, sighed, and pitched to his feet.

"I could feel - something." he struggled trying to find the right word, his back left foot curling and uncurling, as though it grasped at something that was no longer there. Thalassa gave his arm a sympathetic squeeze, then fell back into her usual brusque demeanor.

"Right then. Get this cleaned up and packed away. Don't want to draw too much attention to ourselves." Nathaniel nodded and began to scoop the spheres into a sack, wincing as they jostled together.

Dusk fell over the tiny cove as Thalassa and her crew made preparations to return to the Morning Star. Most of them would fly, of course, but Anrach dove into the water without hesitation, tugging on the ropes that propelled the land-bound Hades' driftwood raft. Leisurely Thalassa took to the sky, watching as her shipmates darted among the sea spray, dipping low to torment Hades or laugh as Anrach spat flumes of seawater at them. In the distance she saw her ship and put on a burst of speed. She wanted to be home.

The sails and rigging creaked as she landed, her claws biting deep into the deck. She couldn't stay long, of course, having offered to take first watch on the beach, at least for a few days until the sand had smoothed and the evidence of the wealth buried there disappeared. She edged her way into her cabin, the soft nest on her bunk calling strongly to her, and deposited the sack she had carried with her, away from the beach. The burlap jingled as she set it down, and she smiled at the thought of the gold within. More gold than most could ever hope to have, and it was only a small fraction of what was buried nearby.

She heard the tell-tale thumps as her crew landed on the deck, and the ship shifted slightly as the winch engaged to pull Hades from the water. As she emerged from the cabin, she blinked in the ruby and amethyst light.

"Guard my ship." she said, clapping Hades on one massive shoulder, handing over control to her first mate. The Plague dragon met her eyes and nodded, then began issuing orders. Within moments the rest of the crew was scampering, preparing the ship for a night at anchor. Thalassa watched for a few moments, then launched herself into the air. The sun sank under the horizon as her powerful wingbeats rattled the sails, and she looked back in time to see a green flash illuminate the faces of her crew.

When she landed on the soft sand of the cove, night had fallen. Tiny pinpricks of silver spotted the indigo sky and she settled in for a long watch. Hoots and cries filled the trees behind her, and she tucked herself deeper into the undergrowth, her eyes on the mouth of the cove.

Hours passed. She watched the moon rise, it's distant circumference only a thin crescent tonight, leaving a smear of white along the waves. As it rose in the sky, though, she noticed the wind growing, and the wispy scudding clouds that began to race across the stars. Thunder crackled in the distance. Then, she heard wing-beats. A small shape darted into the cove.

"Thalassa!" it called, and she recognized Slick's voice. She sounded - scared. Thalassa extracted herself from the undergrowth and raced towards her Spymaster. Blood littered the sand, dark droplets glittering in what was left of the moonlight. Slick's aqua eyes turned on her captain and she immediately began to babble. "It's Hades! He's - they've - something's wrong! Floe is dead, and Ty. He killed them! He pulled the anchor and - " she paused, her eyes bulging, then she began to cough. Thick, viscous blood bubbled between her fingers and spotted the sand. "He's coming!" she gasped, then collapsed.

Thalassa reached towards her friend and crewmember. Slick lay still on he beach, no longer breathing. A long, deep wound scored her side and bright blood still trickled from it. Thalassa gulped and looked towards the open ocean. The wind whipped fiercely now, and she could hear the tell-tale snap of the sails as the Morning Star pushed its way into the shallow waters of the cove. Without thinking she took to the air, her wings beating furiously as she flew towards her ship.

She had seen much bloodshed in her many years of piracy, but nothing prepared her for the sight of her slaughtered crew. Anrach lay crumpled at the base of the mast. Nathaniel was curled in a ball, clutching at something that no longer existed. Floe hung from the rigging, as though she had tried to escape up the mast. Ty was nowhere to be seen.

And Hades stood at the wheel, his red eyes smoldering. Thalassa screeched, folded her wings, and plummeted towards her treacherous first mate. The Snapper turned just in time to have her claws rake uselessly along the thick leathery hide of his back. His massive tail swept upwards and caught her in the chest, knocking the breath from her lungs and throwing her backwards. He left the helm and stalked towards her, his footsteps echoing ominously. Above them, the sails creaked and groaned as the wind screamed. Raindrops began to pelt them as the storm finally came to a head. The waves began to crash against the hull and water splashed onto the deck.

Thalassa, still reeling, swiped at Hades as he approached her, leaving deep scores across his face. He growled and snapped at her, trying to catch her wing or foreclaw in his teeth. A surge of water picked up the captain and she slid beneath the body of her opponent. With her powerful back legs she kicked upward. At the same time the boat shook, catching on some rock or coral outcropping below the surface. Hades stumbled.

Thalassa took her chance. While Hades was off guard she rolled, and planted her shoulder in the center of his chest. As the ship shook she managed to knock him off balance. Another grating groan came from above and she heaved, pushing Hades off of her. A final, gut-wrenching snap, and the boat came to a shuddering halt, canted at a sharp angle. Hades awkwardly tried to catch his balance, teetering on his back two feet. Thalassa threw herself at him, and they both toppled over the side of the boat.

There was a brief moment of eerie silence, then the rush of water as they crashed into the surface of the waves. Thalassa kicked and struggled, finally managing to dislodge herself from Hades. The last thing she saw was his ruby eyes, filled with fury, as they disappeared into the depths.

The sound of waves.

Glowing red eyes.

Thalassa gasped, then choked as a stream of salt water poured from her nose and mouth. She coughed, then opened her eyes. She was back on the sand of the cove. All around was the detritus of the storm, and, as she looked closer, the remnants of her ship. She looked out into the mouth of the bay at the wreckage of the Morning Star. Not much remained, as it continued to pound into the rocky reef. The bodies of her crew were long gone.

She crawled to her feet, wincing at the dried salt crusted in every joint, at the aches and wounds she had taken. With a heavy heart she marked the location of the beach in the great map in her mind, then laboriously took to the sky. Perhaps if she flew fast and far enough, no one would see the tears she shed.
