Conchita never paid attention to the eyes of her prey, but she didn't have to see the color to know where they hailed from. This one was Fireborn. The blood was hot against her snout, and it had a smoky flavor. What a denizen of the Ashfall Wastes had been doing so far from home didn't really concern her, but she filed the thought away. Others tended to be more tolerant of her dietary preferences if they saw some benefit from it. Normally, that just constituted handing over a little treasure or a tidbit of information. Those who she couldn't pay off weren't dragons she enjoyed the company of.

But Calico's spoils weren't a bribe.

The crimson Imperial was a glutton, and a discerning one at that. She wouldn't turn down food, but she had clear preferences. Ridgeback meat stank of fish. Nocturnes barely had any meat on their bones, and Fae didn't even constitute a mouthful. Both Imperials and Pearlcatchers were stringy. Snappers and Tundras were her favorite, strong and supple and soft, and when she could get them, she wouldn't share. Unless...

The Snapper lying in front of her had lived a long life, no doubt, though the marks of old age had not set in. She was massive, with strong legs and a thick hide. Her meat wasn't stringy. It was firm, but not unpleasantly so. It had a tang and saltiness to it, which Calico had explained once as the result of Snapper muscle having excellent mineral retention. She was in excellent health, apart from being dead.

No one but Calico could persuade Conchita to pass up a choice cut of meat.

She returns to Gravity's Pull that evening clutching a bloody bundle- the leftover scraps of the Snapper, wrapped up for safekeeping in the creature's own hide. Rather than heading for the hollowed-out meteorite she called her home, she made her way to mouth of a large cave at the base of a crystalline spire. She noses the bundle through the door between slithering in herself.

"I was wondering when you'd be back." Not so much as a hello. That was typical of Calico- quick and to the point. "What have you got for me?"

"A female Snapper from Ashfall. I caught her near the Dragonhome border."

"It's fairly common for Snappers to make a pilgrimmage to Earth territory. How much is left?"

"Umm... a leg, the shoulders, most of the bones... the hide's all there."

"I imagine so. Snapper hide is like rock. Bring her over, I'd like a look."

There's a large hewn stone surface in the middle of the room. Calico called it her "autopsy table." Conchita picked up the bundle and set it down there, pulling apart the edges of the hide and letting its contents spread out, careful not to jostle anything too severely.

The other Imperial leans in closely, the tip of her plague mask almost touching the remains.

"Trapezius muscles still intact, deltoid of the severed anterior limb partially intact. Excellent bone structure," she mutters, more for her benefit than her companion's. Conchita was well accustomed to Calico's tendency to think aloud. "Was her tail intact?"

"Yes."

"Assuming we are looking at a fully developed adult... which, we are, judging by skeletal fusion... you may have swallowed some of the bones."

"Well, I did say 'most.'" She smirks. "Would you like them back?"

"At this point, your digestion will have decalcified them. That won't be necessary." Conchita gives her an incredulous look in response to Calico's matter-of-fact answer. "I'm aware of your gest," the Calico continues, "It was amusing."

"Which is why you aren't laughing at all," the cannibal retaliates, but it's with a smile.

Calico doesn't reply. She goes over to a chest and extracts bonecutters and a scalpel. Then she retrieves a couple sterile dishes from a shelf.

"Her hide is exceptional. I doubt she ever went hungry," she comments, cracking the humerus axially and carefully scraping the marrow into one of the dishes with the tip of her scalpel. "I should be able to leech plenty from the bones."

Conchita nods absently. The best thing to do when Calico was lecturing was to just smile and agree.

The doctor took a large flask of blue liquid from a tray and slipped on some thick rubber gloves. After retrieving a tank from a row of similar vessels along the wall, she returns to the table, and begins carefully loosening the remaining meat from the bones along what's left of the Snapper's shoulders. Once the meat is free, she deposits it in the tank and pours the blue potion over it. Mist erupts from the container, and Calico quickly stretches a rubber seal over the top.

"What I've just done is-"

"Cryonic treatment. I've seen you do it plenty of times. It makes the meat taste awful."

"You... you haven't been breaking into my storeroom for snacks, have you? The side-effects of eating cryonically-treated meat-"

"Gods, Callie, I'm kidding!" Conchita howls with laughter. "You know I wouldn't! I'm not stupid!"

"I wasn't saying you... You said that you... That wasn't funny, Conchita." She sounds hurt.

Conchita frowns.

"I didn't mean anything by it. I shouldn't mess with you like that. I know how stressed out you get, being a genius and all that."

"It's fine," Calico says, and she means it. She moves the bone aside and examines the hide more closely. "You know, I think I might be able to use this right away."

"On your current project? Ooh, wonderful! Does this mean I get a sneak peek?"

"I suppose. Follow me." She turns toward a hung canvas flap, covering a tunnel that leads further down into the earth. Conchita follows after.

They move past shelf after shelf of pickled organs, frozen flesh, and glowing concoctions. Bones hang strung up on the walls, a macabre catalogue of skeletal components. Further still, there are the cages. Inside lurk beasts of all sorts, representatives of all manner of races subservient to dragonkind. The newly captured ones rattle their bars, screeching and howling and crowing and hissing. Those that have been under lock and key longer sit back along the walls, quietly and grimly resigned.

The operating room is insulated from the outside behind several canvas doors, several feet of stone, and a sound-warding spell. Inside, there's another "table" of smooth stone, massive enough to lie a Guardian across. Though the creature strapped down to it at the moment is much smaller than that. It's about the size of a Mirror, though nothing like one in shape. It is skinless, patchwork muscles sutured together over a jigsaw skeleton, its piecemeal digestive systems still partially visible. Six wings protrude from its back, mis-matched trophies from beasts of both feather and scale. Its heal lolls to one side, makeshift maw stuck in a mad scream. It's unconscious.

"Beautiful, right?" Calico asks, her normally calm voice pitched up with a hint of excitement.

"Without a doubt," Conchita replies, her gaze fixed on the scientist. Beautiful indeed.
