He had just... showed up one day. Dark as night with bright purple eyes and the happiest smile anyone in the entire clan had ever seen. He had just... trotted up, a occasionally a bit wobbly on his feet, and plopped down beside the first of them he encountered. No clan in the area had any knowledge of who he was or where he'd come from or how he'd ended up in their custody. And they might worry but he's just so... happy. Cheerful and bright and quick to shove his entire body against whoever seemed to be having a bad day. ...then they noticed he wasn't growing up. He ate and drank and slept and never aged a day. Which was... a bit odd. But he certainly never seemed to mind. He pounced on whatever tails happened to be in the vicinity when he happened to be in an especially playful mood and giggled when he was picked up, and had a very innocent expression when found next to whatever mess he'd gotten himself into. And so they just sort of... accepted it. Then he wandered into the brambles. The entire clan wore themselves out searching, went to every clan near by to get them to join the search too, because he might be a weird, perpetually cheerful perpetual hatchling, but he was their weird, perpetually cheerful perpetual hatchling. |
They found him in the middle of a clearing, completely unharmed and absolutely delighted by the golden fireflies which hovered around him. The fireflies followed them as they returned home, and congregated around him as soon as they set him down again. (And they'd heard stories, of dragons with a flickering sort of magic, which called into being winged motes of energy. But... well, he was their weird hatchling.) After the first time they watched his open gleeful grin tracking a firefly backward so he fell onto his back with a squeak, they collectively agreed that this new bit of weirdness was hardly to be remarked upon. After all, when weighed against 'mysteriously showed up on the doorstep and never seems to age or fall into sadness', 'surrounded by golden, glowing possibly-bugs' didn't really tip the scales at all. And somewhere, deep within the darkness, a mother smiles, for her cheerful child has found a happy home.
