J U L I A N
Prince | Bard | Gentle | Happy

The son of a Nature Warlord, Julian was picked from a hatchery that groomed Nature seedlings for high-profile aristocrats to adopt. He had been the largest, most robust looking egg, destined to be a strong dragon son for the war lord. But instead, a scrawny little tundra emerged from the egg seed. Ever since that moment, his father had been forever disappointed with him.

Julian could never live up to his fathers expectations, no matter how skilled he became at archery or swordsmanship. He was a soft bleeding heart, with no will to conquer land for the glory of the Gladekeeper. His father was hard on him, driving him to be better and stronger. And Julian did all he could to be that dragon he wanted.

But Julian truly loved the art of song. He sang in private, practicing with a broken lute he'd found in the trash. Until his servants found out and applauded his abilities, and then Julian only needed to hide from his father. He sang everywhere he went, tunes about his beloved servants, silly ditties about daily life. Everybody loved his songs, and loved him.

But all good things end, and one day, while Julian had thought his father had been out on duty in the heart of the Labyrinth, he sang a tune for many in the throne room just as his father walked in. In a haze of anger, his father broke his lute and demanded he stop at once. Julian wanted to stand up to his father, but the look he gave Julian meant he had no chance.

That was the moment he met Harlequin. She seemed to be a proper lady, and watched with subdued eyes as his father ripped into him with his hard words. Julian saw the small fae watch with little reaction, until she was called upon.

She would be his intended bride. He couldn't begin to understand how this had happened. But he knew he had to leave, to get out of the horror show his home had become. And so he ran away, without any help or guidance. He was too afraid for the repercussions he might bring upon his servants had he asked for help.

His father had always predicted that he would never be able to live a normal life outside the castle. He was too coddled and soft for the world outside. But he did he prove his father wrong. Julian was a natural when it came to living as a peasant. He new how to do a multitude of things, and used his talents to exchange for money and other things. He found another lute and began to travel with a band all over Sornieth to play his music.

He thought he would never step foot within the Nature territory again. Somehow, that didn't happen. In a confusion of stories and directions, they traveled into the Nature flight for a festival. Julian found himself jumping at shadows, afraid his father or his guards would find him, but never had they before.

While he was in the Nature territory, at a festival no less, he saw a face he'd never thought he'd see again. Harlequin, the little fae from before, came running through the festival, right past him never even noticing his presences. Not far behind where a troupe of official looking knights.

Of course Julian couldn't resist following her. She represented the life he could have had, and she was obviously in trouble. Julian wasn't heartless, anyway. He watched as the knights ran te wrong direction, and then promptly followed her in the right one as she slowed down into an alleyway.

They stood face to face for a long time. Silent. She looked like a rabbit pinned by a fox. Julian gripped his lute in a nervous habit.

"Hello." He said, near breathless with excitement. He never thought he would be this excited and terrified to touch an old part of his life.

"Leave me alone." She growled, before flitting away into the sky. Julian followed her, uncertainty tainting his excitement. This was the first of many brutal, rejecting words that she would speak to him. But something about her called him. To protect her, to give her a life outside of the confines of nobility.

She was very good at escaping from his grasp, but like always she could never really get away. It seemed to frustrate her endlessly; perhaps even more than when her own guardians came to retreive her. Sometimes she would hide from her knights, but upon bumping into him Harlequin would only jump right into the arms of her awaiting captors. Somehow that was better than being around him.

Eventually he didn't even need to try; they just found themselves together. The complete lack of effort it took for her to end up finding him was astonding. Even on nights when he drowned in ale and slept until noon, she bumped into him while leaving her room the very same evening. Her hissing of hatred made him realize it wasn't worth it anymore to just woo her and watch her leave.

"We keep doing this; you and I." Julian began one night, after she was shot out of the sky and landed in his arms. She gasped as she tried to detangle herself from his arms, but only found that the bolas was tangled around all of her limbs, clearly meant for a larger dragon.

"Yes;I'm quite fed up with it." She griped, struggling with her unmanagable predicament. Julian began to untangle her as well.

"Wouldn't it just be better not to fight it anymore?"Julian tugged at the ropes some more, and looked up to the skies to watch as a sentry shadow fell across the sky. "I could help you, you know."

"And how could you help me? You're just a spoiled, sly little noble piece of--" Harlequin squeeked when Julian's rough paw pads clamped down on her muzzle. He slid her closer to his side, hunched in on himself and bowed his head. One of his wings shaded her from view as the knight on sentry duty made his landing just feet away.

The large, roughed up pearlcatcher took one look at him, saw the lute and hat on the ground next to him and pushed forward, searching the alleyway and road further out for his lost trinket.

"I'm pretty good camoflage when it comes down to it." He chuckled lightly as he set her free from his silencing grasp. They worked together and freed her limbs finally from the bolas. Harlequin was silent, but Julian could see things dancing round her mind. "Also, I know of a dragon, a wizard of such, who can bestow lasting enchantments upon one's appearances."
