Biography

The creaking of the mast pierces the silence like a loose board on a stairwell. The ship stands tall, but even its cliff-high sails are insignificant against the night-lit sea. Waves rock against the hold, and a metallic chill bites at the nervous souls within.

There is static in the air.

Suddenly —

The ocean throbs, beats like a drum, and calls down a blast that breaks the great oak mast in two. All at once the world turns brilliant and scalds the sailors’ eyes. What does not perish instantly is thrust under the current’s chariots to drown. The wood is ablaze, now.

Soon, the panic will fade, and all that is left of that formidable ship will be a collection of charred splinters. Less than a mile below, the fish will notice nothing more than an unusually bountiful meal.

The ocean is once again still.
