Former Captain of a pirate ship, Rai and a few of his crew retired from the rebellious life as scoundrels and settled down. For Rai the main reason was his health. During the attack of an unfriendly rivals' ship he was severely wounded. After the surgeon, Cas, and Felara (sailing master and witch) had patched him up as best as they could, he still wouldn’t heal. It seemed that the wounds were partially caused by magic. And until they could find a cure for the “curse“ Rai would have to stay far away from the open seas as water made him worse.
Reluctantly he had to give up his ship, though a small number of his closest mates joined him onshore.
Ilmatar is his adopted daughter. She was found on a deserted island as a hatchling, her family nowhere near. Rai figured that having a Wind dragon in the crew was good luck and let her tag along. It didn’t take long before she felt like a member of his extended family.
He has lately taken the young Valerius as his ward, teaching the young Wildclaw the ways of the sword, piracy and the honour of thieves.
