 "He once loved another pearlcatcher when he was young. She was a light dragon with an unusual pearl that glimmered like a brilliant ruby gemstone. She met a tragic end at the fangs of a serthis, and in her memory he keeps a shard of her pearl in a necklace he never takes off. It shattered into many pieces when she died, as, so he used to say, did his heart. In time he was able to move on from her, but he keeps her memory close to his chest, and he could swear sometimes that he can feel a heartbeat deep within the glittering shard." |

***It was late into the night when he felt it stir against his chest once again. He had grown so used to it that it no longer stirred any hope within him, but he grasped the amulet as he always did, pressing it gently to his lips before letting it rest against his chest once again. He'd long given up caring how strange the action made him look to others. This time, however, something accompanied the faint heartbeat that made his heart skip a beat. "Dundee?" ***The voice was so faint, as though she had been roused from a deep and endless sleep, that he believed for a moment that he'd finally gone mad. "Merida?" He whispered to the darkness, feeling foolish for daring to speak. As though he was dreaming, she whispered his name once again and he sobbed, clutching the pearl shard more tightly than he had since she'd first died. Though she was still weak they spoke until the sun breached the horizon and he fell asleep holding her heartbeat close, afraid to let go in case she slipped away. When his eyes opened and she greeted him again, he realized for the first time in years what happiness felt like. ***She told him of the years she spent wandering adrift, refusing to move on but unable to find an anchor to the world she used to know. The only things that seemed to bind her were the shards of her pearl, calling gently from beyond the darkness she seemed to be trapped in. It was him who pulled her from the in between, him who brought her back slowly, pulled her soul from the murky black of the forgotten afterlife for lost souls. |

He delves into the most remote and forgotten corners of sornieth to locate relics of the forgotten ones who came before dragonkind, donating them to the clan to further their knowledge of history and science. No matter what marvels he finds on his travels, however, nothing will ever compare in his eyes to the jewel of his life, and he reminds her of that fact every day they spend together. On the nights where he longs to hold her close he feels her heart beat against his chest, and she reminds him of all that they've been through to be together. Not even death could keep them apart, she whispers, and nothing could keep her from him now. |
