Biography

War-Queen Noc | The Brighthammer
The sun beats down, so white and hot as to make the very sky inhospitable to the eyes, and the cry of the cicadas seems to swell with the pounding heat. The poplars toss their silvery heads, though the wind does little to alleviate the noonday swelter. Standing atop a dusty bridge, one is met by the laughter of water rushing away underfoot, and the cool scent of lilies. The white river, winding like a shimmering road through the golden hills, passes through this place before tumbling into the great canals that feed the city's water supply. Small barques carry river-catch from the wetlands to the stone quays that line the main banks, drawing a menagerie of dragons and birdlife. On days like this, the waters leap and froth with the antics of hatchlings bathing and playing beneath the great marble arches and the watchful eyes of their parents. A kingdom of summer amidst the ruins: that is what best describes Val-ar-Aion.
The matriarch of this clan seems more a part of the architecture itself than a living, breathing dragon. Her ivory scales are weathered and cracked, as hard and as rough as stone, though her smile is as warm as the summer breeze. In the shaded cloisters of the ruins, the heat relents somewhat, and the insect chorus- erstwhile a deafening din- is now a distant drone, muted by the high stone walls. The only light here is that which filters through the restless canopy- a much-needed retreat in the land of endless sun. In this idyllic courtyard, the ancient guardian has settled her weary frame, her tail swishing absently in the long grass. A thick tome lies propped open on her arm. Eyes lingering on the page, she speaks in a baritone rumble:
"Hmmm... My son, Tyrion, has insisted that I take up scholarly pursuits in honor of our Lady, but you know... I cannot make out this tiny text at all," she says, blinking blearily. Closing the book, she rises. The Matriarch bows deeply, and one can see that her crown is only a wreath of tiny flowers.
"Welcome, traveler, to Val-ar-Aion, the City of Lamps."

The Old Guard
City of Angels, City of Light
Shrouded in a veil of antiquity, the ancient city of Val ar Aion is a place out of time, a sanctuary from the ravages of conflict and progress. Protected by the Brighthammer's Peace, it serves as a waypoint for pilgrims on their journey to the Beacon, guided by the glittering spires and the call of distant clarions across rolling hills of gold: a place of healing and learning flourishing midst the ashes of three thousand years of war. A scar that her denizens, with their peculiar longevity, should not soon forget, and yet there is a forgetfulness that hangs over the City of Lamps- a haze of nostalgia that renders suffering a half-remembered dream.
Throughout its storied history, the kingdom in the ruins has taken many names: Val-ar-Aion, the City of Lamps, the Summer Country. This last is perhaps the most paradisaical, untouched by winter and suspended in the golden season of youth, where time moves slow as honey, like the wide and sluggish river that runs through it. When the long nights of the Hewn City take hold, hundreds of Sacridite lanterns alight amidst the evening prayer, driving back a deep and unnatural darkness: here, it takes its name as the City of Lamps, the last bulwark against a threat that must remain buried.
Despite the land's elysian reputation, danger still lurks in the shadows of the ruins. The City itself is a palimpsest, built upon the bones of fallen cities dating back to the Second Age- and older still, a darkness deep below. Of all the laws the kingdom has accumulated across the ages, there are two most particular that her denizens insist on: do not delve too deep, and do not stray from the light.
