FOSTER
The Surgeon

Foster is quite familiar with nearly every member in the clan, or at least familiar with every important member in the clan. While most assume he maintains a stoic face because of his mysterious mask, he is the one most likely out of the three to pull pranks or do anything maliciously.

Those in the clan would describe him as a polite dragon that's practically flawless when it comes to doing what he does best-- dealing with the wounded and ill. His medical practices specializes in operations where organs are removed or carefully worked upon, though that hardly seems to happen in the clan. On the other hand he's also quite skilled with dealing with diseases and odd illnesses-- but once again, his true talents often go unused for weeks on end. For the most part he's found tending to minor wounds and sicknesses from hatchlings or those training to become brawlers. Some had joked that perhaps taking on another role would be good for Foster since dire situations gravely arose, to which Foster would quietly chuckle from behind his mask, explaining how he could never dream of doing anything else.

Many dragons in the clan have questioned of the mask he wears, there's hardly any sickness going around the clan and yet he's always found wearing it, he even joined the clan wearing such a mask. Some suspect he wears it to hide his face but the majority just laugh at that theory, claiming it's probably a 'surgeon thing' or something of the sort. He neither confirms or denies either of these suggestions and has never been seen without his mask.

Foster has little to no capacity for magic or whatsoever, though his skill with the knife is unparalleled and he is known to make quick but fatal cuts. Most dragons simply believe this to be yet another 'surgeon thing', after all making quick and decisive cuts is probably a needed skill in his field. Those talented with a blade can clearly see there's something more than this being a mere ""surgeon thing"" but upon bringing it up the skydancer will often times shrug, disregarding it as just luck.

Despite being casual with most dragons, most don't seem to know all too much of him. No one can recall his origins and surely none know of many of his hobbies but what's it to them? He's a friendly face that's never done them any wrong, they'd never have a reason to care aside from curiosity. When asked of his origins and life before joining the clan Foster usually claims there isn't much to tell, sheepishly explaining how his previous life was boring, nothing anyone would want to hear about it. The clan's leader Soda invited him into the clan with a welcoming paw, what more was there to tell?

Oh, was there more to tell.

Most days Foster remains near the hatchery to tend to minor cuts and bruises, sometimes even travelling with the brawlers to attend to any wounds they'd receive in combat.. though, as of lately he's been seen hanging around some other dragon's in the clan, perhaps making friends..?

There's also been some rumors lately as some hatchlings had snuck out one night to the woods, a little 'adventure' they called it, though they claimed they'd seen Foster-- a dragon they trusted and spent much time around-- and a strange dragon out in the woods. Not only that but there was blood staining the coat of that strange dragon, causing the hatchlings to scurry back to the clan in fear.
The rumors have died down a bit as Foster and another dragon explained they had been out that night hunting together, suggesting perhaps the hatchlings had seen them and mistook the other dragon as the 'strange dragon', the blood surely from the prey they'd shared that night..

But since when has Foster done any sort of hunting?

Bound by an oath to the Gods, the ancestors of Surgeon dragons were among the first to dedicate their lives to the pursuit of medicine. Along with their oaths, these dragons are granted abilities by the Gods to help them in their detection and treatment of the ill. Enhanced resistance to disease allows them to be in close proximity to diseased dragons without being infected by viral or bacterial pathogens. In addition, specialized scent and taste receptors allow them to pick up the scent of illnesses and analyze the composition of blood. Upon swearing their oaths, these dragons are also stripped of their coloration although many still appear pigmented with various shades of red - the result of blood sampling.

Over the generations, these dragons have passed their knowledge of medicine down to future surgeons and doctors. Some dragons swear their oaths at a young age, while others decide much later in life. Although Surgeons are not restricted to a single flight, they are granted flight-specific abilities dependent on their elemental God. While many remain true to their oaths, their abilities and knowledge also predispose them to corruption and some have been known to fall to insanity or bloodlust.

“I swear by the Lightweaver and call all the gods and goddesses to witness, that I will observe and keep this oath, to the utmost of my power and judgement. I will teach my art without reward or agreement, and impart my knowledge to all of those who are to follow. I will remember that medicine is both a science, as well as an art and that sympathy and understanding may outweigh procedures and drugs. I will not be ashamed to admit when there is something I do not know or understand, and I shall call in my colleagues when the skills of another are needed.

I shall tread with care in the matters of life and death. It may be within my power to save or take a life, but above all, I must not play at God. I will prevent disease wherever I can. And if I do not violate this oath, may I enjoy life and art, respected and remembered hereafter.”

Surgeons and Chirurgeons

Lore

Bound by an oath to the Gods, the ancestors of Surgeon dragons were the first to dedicate their lives to the pursuit of medicine. Upon swearing their oaths, these dragons are granted abilities by the Gods to help them in their detection and treatment of the ill. Enhanced resistance to disease allows them to be in close proximity to diseased dragons without being infected by pathogens. In addition, specialized scent and taste receptors allow them to pick up the scent of illnesses and analyze the composition of blood. As a mark of their calling, these dragons are stripped of their original coloration and stained with shades of red--the color of blood, the life-giver.

Ancient dragons of this subspecies still call themselves by its older name, "Chirurgeon."

The Oath
(Adapted from the Hippocratic Oath)
“I swear by the [ELEMENTAL GOD] and call all the gods and goddesses to witness, that I will observe and keep this oath, to the utmost of my power and judgement. I will teach my art without reward or agreement, and impart my knowledge to all of those who are to follow. I will remember that medicine is both a science as well as an art and that sympathy and understanding may outweigh procedures and drugs. I will not be ashamed to admit when there is something I do not know or understand, and I shall call in my colleagues when the skills of another are needed.

“I shall tread with care in the matters of life and death. It may be within my power to save or take a life, but above all, I must not play at God. I will prevent disease wherever I can. And if I do not violate this oath, may I enjoy life and art, respected and remembered hereafter.”

As Surgeons and Chirurgeons who keep their oath are granted special boons, those who break their oath are cursed. They are not stripped of their abilities, but they will never know true pleasure or happiness again until they repent and re-devote themselves to the service of others.
