THE TENTH DOCTOR

No one is really sure who the Doctor is, where he comes from, or why he refers to himself as the "Tenth" as if there were other Doctors before him. His eyes indicate his origin to be somewhere in Earthlands but if anything he acts more like a flighty Wind dragon than an Earth dragon. He claims to be from someplace called Gallifrey which is generally assumed to be a lesser-known island in the Earthsaker's domain, but he only explains that his birthplace is somewhere far away and leaves it at that, his eyes unfocusing as if he can hardly bear the thought. One of the more outlandish rumors states that he is an alien from beyond Sornieth's atmosphere, which, when one considers his eccentric personality, odd behavior, and incredible intelligence often isn't hard to believe. Not to mention the way his skin radiates with a strange, powerful energy when injured or that he claims to be over 900 years old.

(It is unknown whether he's serious or not about his age, though when compared to the fact that he also has two hearts, just like the rumor of him being alien it isn't so hard to believe. His physical abnormalities such as his two hearts and his impressive regenerative capabilities are usually attributed to Arcane radiation left over from a Dominance battle years before. Mutants with similar conditions aren't unheard of, though they're generally not as physically sound as the Doctor.)

It may not be possible question the Doctor's intelligence, but the dragons of Ralakay certainly can and often do wonder if he is entirely sane. He willingly admits this with a crazed smile plastered on his face: "I'm just a madman with a blue box." (Whatever that means.) When excited, which is often and over pretty much anything unusual, he goes into a manic sort of frenzy full of loud outbursts and exclamations. He is an interesting dragon to be around and even more interesting to talk to; he is quite fond of history and speaks about it with the same vivid language and detail as if he were describing a memory.

Mad or not, the Doctor is an important member of Ralakay Glen, when of course, he is there. He rarely stays for more than a week at a time, and then disappears along with Idris for months or even years. He claims that he gets itchy feet from staying in one place for too long but he doesn't give off the impression of a nomad. More of a lonely traveler desperate to find meaning and hope.

His role around the clan isn't wholly clear, though. His official title is "Doctor" even though he bears no other name, but he does a lot more than just serve as a healer. (Nevanah isn't particularly fond of him anyway; he constantly and unintentionally steps on her toes when she is trying to treat her patients, and often makes poor Riveros feel like a third wheel to his mentor.) He carries a strange device he calls a "sonic screwdriver" that has many functions and has made him the basic mechanic around the camp. Elcid, on the other hand, thoroughly enjoys working with the Doctor, as he is one of the few dragons in Ralakay with the intelligence to understand Elcid's craft.

If he were to have a job title, it would probably be clan advisor, a position assumed purely by accident as his wisdom earned from 900 years allows him to accurately assess most situations and give sound advice. His guidance is invaluable, even if he gets sidetracked often.

He was found in the outer reaches of Ralakay territory one day, staring with almost obsessive interest at a mutated predator that would have killed him if Vivecca and Feyah hadn't shown up in time. He is a lot more capable than first impressions might suggest, but he flat out refuses to defend himself physically unless given no other choice. Diplomacy is his weapon of choice.

He is willing to go to great lengths to protect the Clan. He will throw himself onto battlefields, unarmed, his claws at his sides, and bring an entire army to its knees with the power of his words. There is a lot more to conflict than just who threw the first punch, but even he would admit that sometimes fighting is inevitable. He just won't be the one to do it, even though he has come close several times. He won't willingly see another dragon hurt, especially by his own paws. But even so, he displays considerable skill with a sword, suggesting training stemming from military past.

But that is one thing he never talks about. War ravaged his home and he had something to do with it. That's all anyone can glean; when that anguished look of utter despair crosses his face the conversation is over. Even his closest friends know not to push him that far.

While the Doctor is a very friendly, kindhearted dragon who radiates charm that can befriend a random passerby after mere minutes of conversation, he is very careful about who he chooses to call his friends. The list is extremely small. Pandorica and Idris are the only two with whom he has any sort of deeper relationship. He shares freely with his friends -- "companions," he calls them -- but tends to withdraw when he senses acquaintance becoming too close, as if he has been hurt before by another dragon, or maybe is recovering from sort of loss that hurt him just as badly.

The Doctor is so expressive and outgoing and always with a smile on his face that no one would guess the demons he struggles against with every waking moment. War ravaged his home because of him. He gave up his very self to become what was needed because he was unable to give up his morality for the code of a warrior, and in the end he went too far. Countless lives ended in a single moment to stop a war that might have ended so many more, but he came out the only survivor. He is terrified that that monster that made him the last of his kind will rear its ugly head and he won't be able to hold it back despite it all. In the past it was his friends who held him back, made him see the humanity in the worst villains. Now he has no one.

So rather than risk loosing control, he avoids physical conflict at all cost. When forced into defending himself, all he can hear the screams of the ghosts he murdered echoing in his ears, enraging him, separating his mind from his body and turning him into a monster that only looked like him.

Several dragons, Pandorica especially, have suggested that he might find solace from the demons that gnaw at him in the dark of his mind in worship. But he refused, saying he didn't put his blind faith in some shapeless myth, never mind the fact that the deities have their own lairs within their respective realms. He never felt connection to any of them, at most respecting the Windsinger's desire for adventure, the Arcanist's curiosity, and the Timeholder's omnipotence. He owes allegiance to none of them, but for simplicity's sake states that he is a Wind dragon when asked.
