Smaug is perpetually grumpy, hard to please, and a little overdramatic. He may look big and tough but he wouldn't actually roast another dragon, despite constantly threatening to. Because of his cantankerous nature and impressive size, he protects the clan's treasure and gems, and usually spends his days asleep on piles of gold. He is intimidating to newcomers and young hatchlings, but eventually they all learn that is bark is worse than his bite.

Many members of Ralakay will reply that they cannot stand Smaug when asked, though they all say it with a slight grin and a mischievous twinkle in their eye. He is definitely more than just tolerated as is the outward appearance of his relationship with his clanmates. He would deny it but he secretly considers each and every member of Ralakay to be his family and would protect them as such, despite threatening to incinerate most of them on a daily basis.

No one can really understand quite why Smaug even stays in Ralakay. His old lair was located high in the volcanic mountain ranges of the Scorched Wasteland that -- as he boasts constantly -- contained an impressive gold hoard. He claims he left because a troupe of dwarves chased him out and that he has the scar from a well-placed arrow to prove it, but dwarves are little more than legend in this part of Sornieth so it is unsure whether this is true. Perhaps he just grew tired of being a recluse (and a local terror, if that part of his stories is also to be believed) and took up wandering until he found a pile of treasure worthy of his protection.

Strangely enough, Ralakay Glen's shrine to the Flamecaller is located inside the clan hoard. Smaug had it moved there shortly after he took up the position of treasurekeeper, also volunteering to be her ambassador (also without having been asked). No one is complaining, however. Despite his Ice heritage (a story everyone is afraid to ask about) he has a very close relationship to the Fire element and the Flamecaller and consorts her before making any major decision. Not that he makes many these days other than deciding when to take naps, but the thought is there.

His Charge is a large, pure white crystal that he scavenged from a treasure hoard in an abandoned Earth lair. He likes to say he lay waste to the lair himself, but in reality all he had to do was clear out a few scorpions. No one knows what the stone really is or does. It glows with a soft, warm light, leading to the popular belief that he was once a Pearlcatcher and when he became a Guardian, his pearl changed with him into something more appropriate. But that strange stone is the one thing that he will actually carry out his threats over. He would fight to the death to protect his precious stone, holding it over everything else in the world.
