The fire crackled in the twilight hours on the Zephyr Steppes. There was a soft, contented smile on Marrok's lips as he gazed into the darkening sky where the stars were just starting to come out. His dear Alecto lay curled around him, her large body rising up and down slowly as she napped peacefully. "Father Marrok tell us a story!" One of the young hatchlings in the clan whispered with a giggle. "No sing us a song!" Kokoro, a young imperial, insisted, ginning happily. Beside him, Alecto had awoken and was gazing at him with her startling green gaze. Then she smiled suddenly and nodded, "Yes my love, will you sing us a tale?" Marrok smiled at them all, took up his lute, and began to sing...

Marrok's Story- After the Capture
They had come in the night. A band of Wildclaws and Mirrors crashed through the lair's boundaries. The small golden Tundra woke with a yelp as the invaders ravaged the other dragons in his clan who were trying to fight them back. Marrok had never seen such carnage and his gut twisted in fear as he noticed the young fiery-ice colored guardian hatchling, Alecto, nowhere in sight. He loved all the dragons in his clan but Alecto was special. They were best friends and she meant everything to him. He ducked out of the way of flying claws and teeth, trudging through the now blood-strewn grass, searching for Alecto. The sounds of the fighting, the tearing and the screaming would give him nightmares for the rest of his life. Why was this happening?!

As the fighting began to lesson around him, Marrok, who's frantic search had been in vain, shifted an ear forward in his hiding spot inside a grove of cattails near the back of the lair. "Where is The Golden One?!" A raspy voice screeched.

Marrok froze in terror, his heart beating madly, and strained his ears to listen over the last sounds of fighting. He flinched as a dying roar rang out into the night for the last time because the tundra recognized this to be the voice of the clan leader. In this instant, Marrok realized the full extent of his situation in horror. He was alone now. Alecto was gone; likely already dead, and now his last hope of rescue died in the grass just feet away from his paws.

A glistening tear was just about to fall from his snout when he felt a strong leg kick him from behind and send him tumbling from his hiding spot in a huff. He heard raucous laughter as the voice of someone behind him, presumably the Wildclaw that had kicked him, snickered, "Weh heh heh...lookie what I just found hiding in the bushes!" Marrok cried out and tried to look towards the dragon but something suddenly slammed into his head and his world turned black.

When Marrok awakened again he found himself in heavy shackles and chained within a small golden cage. The cage was being carried on the back of some lumbering larger dragon across a landscape that was utterly alien to the young Tundra. The sky was a putrid color and the land looked like an oozing wound. He heard voices speaking around him but they were too soft for him to make out what they were saying.

In the end, Marrok was brought to the hovel of a strange clan and imprisoned in their rancorous dungeons. They were horrible to to him. They beat him, starved him, and used him as some bizarre cultist's sacrificial object. He would hear them call him the "Golden One" many times but never would he come to understand what this meant.

As time wore on, Marrok began to loose himself as the torture and mistreatment numbed his consciousnesses. He began to forget what the world used to be like and started to believe that his current reality had always been his reality. He had been born to the his horror and, someday, he would die because of it. On that day when his spirit would breath its last, Marrok new he'd finally find peace and so he looked forward to this day.

The only saving lifeline that cut through his haze of pain and numbness were the thoughts of the young icy-red guardian of his childhood. With her, he could remember what it was to be happy. What it was to smile. Perhaps it was these thoughts alone that kept him from giving up.

Then one day, after many years, Marrok was vaguely aware that his body had significantly weakened to the point that he knew he would soon pass from this world. It was for this reason that he didn't trust his eyes as he saw the horrible demons, the cultists dragons, being slaughtered around him by a glowing bright soldier of fire and ice. Her battle cries sliced through the night as her claws devastated the frantic Mirror's and Wildclaws.

With a sublime smile and glossy gaze, Marrok realized that this must be his long-dead friend come to collect his soul away from this place. Yes... he would go with her. He had missed her so much. Alecto...

Healing From Wounds Old and New
As it turns out, Alecto was not a figment of Marrok's dying mind but was truly before him in living flesh and blood. Time had change her as well; the young happy guardian of his hatchlinghood had been replaced with a fully grown dragon who bared the weight of so much pain and suffering on her shoulders. Her lovely green eyes had grown cold and dark and her demeanor no longer had that spark of adventure it once held. The Alecto that stood over him now was a grim, hardened creature so full of hate and pain that it brought Marrok back from the sinking darkness he had been slipping into. He couldn't die and leave her alone like that; not after so many years apart.

Alecto carried Marrok back to the Plateau and the two finally returned to the old resting place of their original clan. In all the years, no other clan had claimed the territory since the terrible massacre on that long ago night but Alecto had nowhere else to go. And so beside the graves of her friends and family, Alecto nursed Marrok back to health. The physical wounds healed much faster than the emotional ones however. Marrok suffered from severe post traumatic stress from his long imprisonment and Alecto was left to deal with her inner turmoil from all the sins she had committed in her violent past. Both suffered scars that would never truly fade but maybe that was how things were meant to be. Maybe they weren't supposed to forget.

After awhile, Marrok proposed to Alecto that they start a clan of their own and keep it open for any who needed a home. They would house any who were homeless and keep their secrets safe from the rest of the world. Alecto fully agreed with this course of action and thus the Clan of the Twisting Lights was born. It was named for the strange bio-luminescent bamboo that grew all around the clan's territory; which was situated in an outcropping of ancient streams and boulders that protected against the wild winds of the nearby Twisting Crescendo. It was a secluded place; one that offered peace and freedom to those who needed it most.

A Note on Marrok's Personality
Marrok is a kind and gentle soul who has been through unimaginable horrors in his past. Even with this however, he has never lost the kindness and empathy to which he was born with. Although his scars are many, he remains a positive individual and is optimistic for the future. He carries a soft wisdom and uses this in his storytelling. After recovering physically, Marrok turned to music as another aid to healing and found that he loved it and was quite good at it. As the clan grew, he started telling the hatchlings of the clan fantastic stories of adventures with his lute. This was how he became the clan storyteller and musician.

Marrok still suffers from severe bouts of PTSD sometimes; especially if he's involved in a violent situation and during these episodes he becomes erratic and wild. He's never hurt anyone other than himself during these episodes but is still trying to get them under control. If nothing else works, Alecto is sometimes the only dragon that can bring Marrok out of them.

M A T E • A L E C T O

A resigned and somewhat awkward presence who resolutely stands guard over Marrok and their clan with absolute loyalty. Her quiet behavior hides old scars and guilt's that will never truly disappear. However, Alecto is a powerful and brave individual who will fight to protect those she loves until the world itself fades away.

FAMILIAR • B R O O

A kind old bear and a sort of therapy companion for Marrok during his bad days. Broo watches over his master with the same loving devotion worthy of any dog in the world. He can tell when Marrok is uneasy and will gently send soothing clouds to calm his nerves. If Marrok's PTSD episode grows too violent however, Broo will go off in search of help.

FAMILIAR • P E R I

A funny little dove who showed up one day when Marrok was still learning how to play his lute. She's never far away and sometimes will coo along with Marrok's music when he plays. She likes to perch on his antlers.
