In a family that adores the dawn, Viola has always been something of a black sheep. While they wake at sunrise, she stirs at sunset. When they enjoy the morning mists, she adores the evening chills. Everything that matters to her family is a part of the day, best seen by the light of the sun, and everything she cherishes is better when coaxed from the shadows by moonbeams and starlight.

It's driven a rift between her and her family, that much is undeniable. She wishes it hadn't, but the truth of the matter is that she cannot live without the night, and they cannot go on without the day. Ever since they all realized there was no compromise, Viola has drifted farther from them, withdrawing into a world of her own where the dark is a comfort and a steadfast friend. It's no substitute for love, but embracing the night instead of pretending to belong to day has made her a little more at ease.

Her powers have thrived in the shadows, too. In the days when she pretended to be a child of sunlight, she was constantly tired, regularly moody, always little more than a shell even when she longed to be something more. With the moon in her veins now, though, she has flourished. Shadows answer her beck and call, and moonbeams wreath her in silver light when she asks. The crickets still with her approach, and the owls turn their knowing eyes away from her dark brilliance. She is more alive than she has ever been before now that she walks through the night. She is everything she was ever meant to be.
