Like all of the other children born to Dissonance and Euphorium, Varin had a life full of potential and promise. He and his siblings grew up with virtually everything they wanted. They received excellent schooling from private tutors, and when the time came to pick just what they wished to do with their lives, their father would hire the best mentors available. Varin wanted to be a mage, so Dissonance sought out a worthy teacher for him. A retired battlemage soon answered Dis' call, and agreed to move into the mansion while training Varin. The young skydancer was of average ability at best, but was committed to learning and improved steadily over the next few months. He could have become a world-renowned mage in his own right, had things kept up at such a pace. Instead, disaster struck. A spell backfired to catastrophic results, its chain reaction causing a small explosion that set the room ablaze. Euphorium raced down to find Varin and his teacher in a crumpled heap on the floor, their flesh burned and even melted together in places. The teacher had already perished, but Varin clung to life. Immediate surgical and magical preservation was required to save him, which resulted in opalized scar tissue that covers a vast portion of his body - alongside grafted skin from his unfortunate mentor. Varin survived, but the mess the spell - and emergency treatment - had made of him left him permanently disabled. He struggled to use any of his limbs or even sit upright and as such was fitted with a wheelchair, and a physical therapist joined his side rather than a new tutor. Bitter, tired, and in constant pain, he continues to live with his mother and father out of necessity. Euphorium dotes on him more than most, blaming themselves for being too distracted to notice something horrible had been waiting in his future. |
