......The first mistake was learning to trust. The second was learning to love. The third? Turning his back on his wife.

......His downfall - set in motion by her betrayal - began when she stabbed him in the back. Literally. Cursed with undeath, the blow was not enough to end him for good, but it left him incapacitated. Upon awakening from a dreamless sleep, Taranis found himself within the metal heart of the Tempest Spire. Sent away from the empire he had built, his home, Taranis had been exalted against his will.

......While some denizens of the Shifting Expanse would have seen working under the watchful eye of the Stormcatcher as a blessing, Taranis saw it as imprisonment. Climbing the corporate ladder lacked the excitement and bloodshed of his former life. During the ages he toiled, he devised a scheme to break himself free. The plan came to fruition and was pulled off without a hitch - but the world he returned to had changed. In his absence, the empire he had built with his former mate had crumbled. With no choice and no titles to his name, the former king set off into the desert.

......It took time, but Taranis had some luck on his side. Building a new empire on the foundations of illicit dealings and organized crime wasn’t easy, but he’s managed to claw his way into good fortune. Taranis remains in the Lightning domain amongst a growing number of thugs and vagrants under his employment. Since his return, he’s met with Amaranth a handful of times. While he isn’t exactly on good terms with his former partner, the two have at least gotten to the point of being able to tolerate one another for minutes at a time. On very rare occasions, the two may even share correspondence when apart, although it remains brief.

......Shaped by the cruelty of life in the Shifting Expanse, Taranis continues to do what he does best - lie, cheat, and steal. There isn’t any room for sentimentality in his life. Not anymore.
