Biography
“When the sun has set, no candle can replace it.” - George R. R. Martin
Through changes in leadership and various assistants trying and failing to work with her, Summer kept her position. She made many new friends and allies for the clan, sending gifts and well-wishes to earn their favor. Summer also trained translators and ambassadors to other flights, helping propel the clan Allixestr into a higher standing.
Soon after she began her career as a diplomat, Summer met Sheerian, an aspiring playwright who had only recently been accepted into the clan. Sheerian claimed he had fallen in love with her at first sight, and desperately tried to win her affection. Eventually, the two formed a tentative relationship, though it only lasted a short while. They had a pair of hatchlings together, who left to pursue their own destinies once they came of age. After a while, Sheerian and Summer ended their relationship, and Sheerian left to serve Shadowbinder directly.
After a while, Summer's position had a new duty: to ensure the comfort of the many traveling dragons who decided to rest with the clan. Summer was more than happy to do this, and made many close friends in her new endeavor. For several moon cycles, her tears at her new friends' passing gave her pearl a soft, white shine.
It was among these traveling dragons that Summer met Ramses, a regal imperial who happened to be passing through the Foxfire Bramble. Summer fell quickly in love with him, and made a point to make his stay as peaceful as possible. Ramses stayed for quite a while, and the two grew very close, eventually confessing their feelings for each other. They formed a relationship and had their own hatchlings. Despite not being an official part of the clan, Ramses was considering staying.
However, one day, while they were walking together, Summer was attacked by an opal snake. The snake's bite, similar to that of its onyx cousin, infected her with a strange form of gembond that took effect almost immediately. Slowly, starting from the bite itself, Summer began to turn to opal.
Ramses was horrified and carried his mate back to the clan's healer, Xactence. Unfortunately, Xactence had no idea what to do, and suggested they seek a cure elsewhere. That night, Ramses decided he would set out again to find a way to stop his mate from becoming solid opal. He had no way of knowing if she would survive the process, and wasn't keen on finding out.
Summer was sad to see him go, but remained hopeful that he would return someday, with or without a cure. Unfortunately, as time passed, it became more and more clear that Ramses was never coming back.
For a short time, a tundra named Aster kept Summer company in her grief, but he, too, moved on quickly. Summer didn't mind; she truthfully saw him as more of a friend than anything else, and hasn't formed any romantic bonds since Ramses.
Eventually, once Rory the mirror became leader of Allixestr, Summer decided to change her name. So much had happened in her life, and she was looking to change the one thing she could in hopes of moving past it all. She encountered the word Aestatis in one of the scholars' texts, before the scholars were exalted, and thought it seemed fitting, despite not knowing its meaning. Changing her name has had little impact on her life, but she doesn't regret her choice.
One of the good things currently in Aestatis's life is the return of her great-granddaughter, Hemophobia, from the Abiding Boneyard. Though Hemophobia's parents have since left the clan, Aestatis welcomed the young pearlcatcher back eagerly. Even now, Aestatis is the only dragon besides Taefrok brave enough to spend time with her, and gladly ignores the obvious disease clinging to Hemophobia's body. As far as Aestatis believes, it doesn't matter if the disease infects her, too; any plague would be preferable to the glimmering stone that threatens each day to end her long life. Even now, the opal continues to grow slowly as the days pass, and Aestatis has no way of knowing if or when it will finally kill her.
She has long since lost hope of there ever being a cure for her disease, or at least a way to stop the opal's growth.

Familiar: Brumae the Orbiting Spirit Latin. "Of winter's chill." |
In the winter after her affliction with what she began calling opalbond, Aestatis met a curious creature during the Night of the Nocturne. It was the spirit of a fish with large eyes, and a pearl like her own. The creature took a liking to Aestatis, and began following her around. After they met, Aestatis found that her ability as a diplomat was improved by the spirit's presence. Those around it felt an immediate sense of calm, and, if they weren't open to it before, were willing to speak with the pearlcatcher. Even when they encountered other pearlcatchers, the spirit stayed close to Aestatis alone. Eventually, Aestatis nicknamed the spirit Brumae, after another word she encountered in the scholars' texts from the Second Age. Though no one could tell her exactly what it meant, the spirit seemed to approve of its new name. |
