Tiamat is the gentle matriarch of the clan, considered its leader in most respects. She founded the clan in the hopes of nurturing dragons who were misfits like her, although she didn't expect her efforts to prove so fruitful, or that Bird Of Paradise would end up merging with a neighboring clan to form a superclan. Nevertheless, most dragons in the clan adore her and see her as the heart of the clan, even if there's now a council deciding clan affairs. Even when Tiamat has made some more controversial decisions (such as allowing Shale, of all dragons, to stay), everyone trusts her judgment implicitly. (Tiamat worries they may trust her too much - after all, she isn't infallible. Sunspot agrees, insisting Tiamat is often too damn nice.)

Despite now leading a clan of her own, Tiamat's beginnings were unassuming. She was always a little different from most other Fire dragons, though, as she was never quite at home bathing in the Ashfall Waste's lava pools. Instead, she longed to swim the cool currents of the ocean, or sun on its sandy shores. Tiamat was also clearly not meant to be a blacksmith, as she was quickly outclassed by other dragons in her age bracket... and then by those even younger. Though her clan was confused when she inevitably left for greener pastures, they gave her their blessing, and Tiamat still feels ties to her homeland. Anomaly to her clan or not, she can still enjoy aspects of the culture from a bit of a physical (and emotional) distance.

Though she was now on her own and theoretically free, her naïveté made her an easy target for others, leading to the darkest chapter of her life. She ended up in a relationship with a mirror whose name she still has trouble saying aloud, bearing multiple clutches for him despite never enjoying his company. For years she shrugged it off, first turning the pain inward, and eventually feeling only a dull resignation that this would be her life until he died. However, one night it escalated into violence and three of her newly laid eggs were smashed by him in a jealous rage when he (correctly) accused her of having feelings for her skydancer friend. Tiamat finally made the hardest choice of her life, taking the remaining hatchling and fleeing into the night.

As a guardian, she was naturally physically strong, and she took odd jobs as hired muscle in order to care for the single daughter she had managed to save, a mirror she named Ishtar. In the aftermath of her children's premature deaths, Tiamat blamed both her ex and herself, channeling that anger into her job as a bodyguard. After all, that was an acceptable conduit.

Like many coping mechanisms, it was useful in the short-term, but unsustainable forever. No matter how many times she repeated her noble goal of wishing to provide for her daughter to herself, she couldn't stop the guilt gnawing away inside, wearing her down as she committed ever-escalating acts of violence. As she began to be contracted for more and more dangerous (and deadly) jobs thanks to her growing reputation and skill, her reasons for doing so morphed over time: first she was doing it for the money (resignedly recognizing that she needed to in order to survive after being left with literally nothing), then she was protecting her daughter's future from horrible corrupt dragons (who simultaneously often employed her), and then...

Unable to justify murder to herself, Tiamat broke. She quit.

It was thanks to Sunspot that Tiamat was able to get back on her feet after that. Sunspot's various skills brought them enough money to live, and she helped Tiamat heal emotionally too, funding trips to wherever she wanted to visit. They spent years taking retreats to various places, hoping it would help Tiamat heal.

And, slowly but surely, it did.

Still, it was initially a surprise when she decided to move in near a Nature native and his budding clan and start her own clan. But she felt her decision was right. After years of wandering, Tiamat had finally found a place she could call home. She named it Bird Of Paradise, named both for her biggest passion, birds, and the tropical plants that were abundant in the Viridian Labyrinth. It felt like her search was finally over.

...at least, she assumes that's what the search feels like to other guardians. Tiamat has trouble understanding the typical guardian's psychology, as she never felt anything as strong as what others of her species describe. She feels deep contentment from taking care of her clan and various injured birds she finds, but she's never been able to identify a single charge. For most of her life, she's felt confused and broken, but lately Tiamat has just taken to describing herself as polycharge; she has multiple charges (birds, family, her clan), and she feels passionately about them all equally. This confuses other guardians, but Tiamat puts on a confident face in front of them nonetheless.

Nanshe is Tiamat's long-lost granddaughter, who unexpectedly tracked her down and decided to settle down in Tiamat's clan. Nanshe's strong-willed and a magical prodigy, pushing the boundaries of what is considered possible magically. She has accomplished a lot as an expert of her field, and Tiamat couldn't be more proud.

But... for all of that, something troubles Tiamat lately. Nanshe's spark is still there, but it seems like she's been spending more and more time alone, pouring over textbooks and staying up at all hours in order to do something. Tiamat has no idea what it is - she'd be the first to admit she has no understanding of reality-bending Arcane magic - but she worries it's consuming her granddaughter from the inside out. Quite literally, too: Nanshe's appearance has altered recently.

Tiamat knows a thing or two about burying grief through obsession, and this is definitely what it looks like to her. But... the question is, what is Nanshe trying to run from? Or toward? Tiamat has many questions and no answers.

Tiamat's (great-)grandchild Nabu is... a bit of a problem child.

Tiamat loves him. She does. But she also sees some of her past worst impulses reflected in him - a tendency toward aggression when stressed, and using his large size to get what he wants no matter who he hurts - and so she made the difficult decision to send him away from Bird Of Paradise. Nabu, in his youth, unfortunately found himself crossing the line of acceptable aggression far too many times in ways even dragons like Shale haven't.

Even now that Nabu is an adult and has settled down in an allied clan under the watchful eye of Arkose's father, Earthquake, Tiamat still worries she made the wrong call. What if she could have done more to help him? What if she was too gentle on him and that was why he never responded to her efforts at rehabilitation? What if...?

Nabu says he's fine, really, and that grandma needs to stop worrying. Tiamat worries anyway.
