Cactus was born under the name Cassandra to a very traditionalist Plague clan. Life in the Scarred Wasteland was difficult, and her clan was fierce in order to survive.

She hated every damn minute of it.

While her family and clanmates were vicious, Cactus was timid and nurturing, traits that confused and frustrated everyone else. So when Cactus contracted a form of wing rot and tried to use her Plague magic to remove the disease and cure herself, it was all too easy for her clan to drive her away for being an abomination to the Plaguebringer. Never mind that she was doing it to survive (shouldn't the Plaguebringer approve of that?). Never mind that it showed resourcefulness (that they would have praised in any other dragon). She was healing, in a way that seemed all too similar to 'disgusting Nature druidism', and hadn't there always been something creepily off about her anyway? So she was deemed an abomination and narrowly escaped being... culled, for no other reason than the clan's health, of course. Half-dead, Cactus ran away to the only place she felt she would be understood, the Viridian Labyrinth.

Many Nature natives were (and still are) mistrustful of Cactus because of the bitter Nature and Plague rivalry, but shortly after Cactus arrived in the Gladekeeper's domain, she met Rubellite, a Nature florist and healer who took her under his wing and healed her disease as best he could, giving her enchanted horns as a form of magical medicine. (It's not perfect, she can still only glide at best. On a bad day, she can barely move her wings at all without painful spasms. She also usually covers up the lattice of scars her illness caused.) At her request, he has been attempting to teach her how to use her natural Plague magic as Nature healing magic, with... mixed results. She remains a devoted follower of the Gladekeeper regardless and is happy with her new home.

But despite all the positives, she can't stop the nightmares, or the flashbacks, or the paranoia that any second any of the clan's Plague dragons will decide she's a disgusting weakness that has to be killed for the clan's good... or the lingering fear that somehow, her former clan was right.

What Cactus doesn't realize (but others around her, like Arkose, do) is that there is something about her that is simultaneously both very Nature and Plague. She may not be vicious like those who raised her, but she has stubbornly survived - and is now thriving.

Cactus reveres the Gladekeeper, having pledged her life to her instead of her disgusting, disease-ridden counterpart. She's seen the goddess in person very few times, but treasures every memory. She hopes to serve the Gladekeeper every day by spreading the gift of life.

Rubellite is Cactus's friend and mentor. It was he who rescued her when she first stumbled into the area, starving and nearly dying from wing rot. He did the best thing he could in the spur of the moment, enchanting a pair of tree branch antlers that he then grafted onto her head, a sort of magical purification until he can figure out how to cure her. Upon learning he was a powerful Nature mage, she requested to be his apprentice; he took her on, impressed that a Plague dragon wants to learn Nature magic despite her inherent disadvantage.

Ever since she joined Bird Of Paradise, Venom has stuck to Cactus's side at all times, becoming a sort of self-appointed bodyguard for her. On the one hand, yes, Plague dragons make her nervous and having someone around does help when she has a panic attack, and Venom has given her some surprisingly solid advice. On the other, Cactus is starting to bitterly wonder if Venom gets a kick out of playing the hero... whether the recipient needs her heroics or not.

Cactus doesn't know how to feel about Arkose. She does seem interested in her (though Cactus thinks presuming romantic interest is making a bit of an assumption), but... no matter how much Arkose says she respects the Gladekeeper and the Nature flight, she's still a Plague dragon. Everything, from how she looks to which god she worships, is a reminder of the life Cactus wanted to leave far, far behind her.

...still, Arkose has only ever been nice to her. That does count a little bit. A very very tiny bit.

By far, the worst Plague dragon in the clan is Shale.

The feeling seems to be mutual. To Shale, Cactus represents the worst betrayal: she has completely forsaken her duty to the Plaguebringer and her homeland.

Worst of all, Cactus knows she's right.
