Leilani, like any good nocturne, is naturally a mimic. She's taken to mimicking the image of a prissy princess, wearing the finest clothes she can get the clan to import or make for her and throwing a fit when she doesn't get her way. No one knows if her claim of being a princess of a distant land is true or not, but given that she's both a nocturne and from the Shadow flight, the odds of it being true are... slim. Her past is a persistent mystery because, beyond her claims of being some sort of royalty, she won't elaborate. Rumor has it something bad happened and her elaborate game of pretend isn't just due to her natural nocturne instincts but may rather be a coping mechanism.

So what can persuade a generally insufferable, whiny brat to actually do something mildly productive, or at least get out of everyone else's way for a while so they can focus?

Evidently, the answer is bees.

Leilani happened upon them by chance on a excursion to the Sea Of A Thousand Currents, a trip she'd come along on because she didn't trust Sandbar to bring back the right dyes for her new silks ("Don't act coy, I know you can't stand me!"), and didn't she know Leilani would only wear the richest blues and purples? Anything less would be a disgrace, and she knew for absolute sure Sandbar would do whatever she could to sabotage her being the premier fashionista of the clan. Which of course she was, without a doubt. Everyone else knew it.

But silks were forgotten when she saw them: hundreds of vibrant indigo bees, weaving in and out of the the old coral revealed by the low water of Tsunami Flats. They seemed to shimmer and dance in the air, the most beautiful sight Leilani had ever seen.

So she captured some.

Once home, she pestered Arkose to tell her everything she could about them ("What are these? What do they eat? What do you mean they don't live in the Scarred Wasteland, do you think I'm an idiot? I know that! But I also know you’re a biology nerd who’s read everything there is to know about every animal, like, ever”) and, once she'd learned the rough basics of coral carpenter husbandry, for once in her life, set to work.

She learned to communicate with them by paying attention to the grand tapestries they wove with their bodies in the air, teasing out individual motions like unraveling fabric. The bees she'd originally captured were able to tolerate each other, but they didn't function well as a group. She set about fixing that. And what if she also bred the next generation to be more intelligent, so they would understand her more complex dances? Maybe she should make them larger, too, to lessen the chance some careless dragon would step on them. And oh, she should probably import dried coral for them - the bees could technically live in hollowed out tree trunks, but what if the bark texture confused them or they didn't feel secure enough? And, also...

Before she knew it, she had a healthy, buzzing apiary, teeming with bees. Her pet project had evolved into her life's purpose.

Despite still usually being an insufferable brat, she has some charms (chief among them: free honey). Lately she's also shown a talent at bartering other clans for lower prices in food and clothing, helped by her skills in manipulating people by whining in just the right ways to avoid lasting repercussions while still getting what she wants. (Fellow merchant Sandbar doesn't know whether to be impressed or annoyed by Leilani's method of 'bartering'. She's settled for a bemused mixture.)

Just don't insult her clothes. Or her bee children. And that glimmer is definitely natural. Definitely.
