(Spoken by Kali)

Early morning moonlight shone through the cavern entrance. I'd been sleeping there in the hall, standard guard duty. As my eyes adjusted to the light, I was startled by a crashing sound, as if something huge had fallen into the brambles just above the lair. Rising to my feet in an instant, I set out towards the noise, Nyx by my side on our way to investigate.

In the back of my mind, a faint voice spoke... "Help me... help..." It was so quiet, I originally shrugged it off as a brain-malfunction. But as I turned back towards the lair...

"Come... help... me..." It was getting louder, and confusion began to set in my mind. Nyx could hear it too, and she could smell something to our left, hidden in the thorns. I dove in.

What I found was nothing short of horrifying. A mess of feathers, fur, scales and blood. A young-looking Coatl was hanging by their torn wing on a particularly strong bramble, seemingly unconscious.

Both of their wings were ripped to shreds. They had deep gashes in their stomach, left leg, and right arm, and scratches all over their face and body. Their tail was twisted into horrific shapes, foul-smelling blood dripping from every wound. And yet, somehow, they were still alive. I carefully got to untangling them from the thorn branches, eventually freeing them enough to carry back to the lair, Nyx propping up one side as I held up the other.

Inside, Tarin had woken and was frantically searching for me. Once he saw me, he gave a terrified little shriek. I laid the injured dragon on my bed, and went to search for Echo, one of our strongest healers. I turned to face them, and though the Coatl appeared dead to the world... I thought I saw a tiny smile directed towards me. Shaken, yet relieved that they were alive, I disappeared around the corner.

Long ago, there was a unique group of dragons. They lived in the sky, far above the territories as they are now, hidden even from the deities. The drakes there were of many professions, including warriors, healers, caretakers, and cooks. One faction was unique, however; when these younglings came of age, they would each be assigned a location on the surface. These dragons would then fly down from the heavens and find a clan to join- and protect that clan until the end of time. These would be chosen to survive for as long as possible, and live on through any disaster, no matter what.

Sorin was one of those dragons.

A Coatl of shadow birth, he was assigned to a clearing near the Foxfire Bramble- a massive wall of thorns thousands of miles long. His task was to make sure that his new clan would never wither, never die, for any reason.

As he took off for the first time in his life, he felt fear and exhilaration. He was to guide a clan! Such a wonderful fate. He was so excited, so happy, so ready.

Alas, fate has a funny way of changing plans.

A demonic being with no name flew up from nowhere and crashed into the stunned Coatl. The beast was dark as the deepest abyss, with red pupils that glared into his soul. Its mouth was too big for its body, stretching like an oozing liquid snake. Sorin fought and hissed, trying to free himself, but was caught in the creature's grasp as it bit down hard on his wing.

They fell towards the pines below.

The beast held tight with its iron grip, claws as large as a ridgeback's digging into Sorin's arms and legs. The Coatl's vision was fading fast from pain, and his feathers were darkening on contact with the thing. As a last resort, he wrapped his tail around the demon's throat, ripping it from the body. As the massive carcass crashed downward, the jaws released Sorin's wing, leaving him to fall helplessly. His mind went blank.

Pain. Intense, immeasurable pain, too powerful to truly describe. Almost like being eaten alive by a toxic acid, melting you from the outside in.

My mind whirls, and I can't see anything. Sharper pain in my wings, as if they're still tearing. I try to open my eyes, but I'm still mostly blind- I can only see a pinprick of light. Not bright by any means, but almost like a glowing fungi.

I call out weakly. My voice rasps, burning my throat, forcing me to whisper. I can hear something coming... coming to help.

As she lifts me, I feel... safe. No fear, no more pain. Fluffy fur beneath my wings carry me into a cave, large and comfortable. Here I can sleep, here I can rest, and tomorrow, I shall find my assigned Clan... I smile, and drift into blissful sleep.

I cannot speak. I cannot move. A gentle Skydancer face looms above, watching, smiling gently. She blinks and places her hand on my forehead.

Suddenly, my body goes into panic. I hiss and thrash, knocking the Skydancer off her feet, and destroying all manner of tools and devices by my side. It stops as soon as it started, and I groan, curling into a ball. My wings hurt more than they have ever hurt in my life. And the pain is spreading.

The Skydancer quickly restrains me, and though my tail lashes, I try not to resist. I have no idea why this is happening to me. I don't remember anything from after my trip preparations.

She waves her arms through the air as blue magic runes flit about between them, and slowly the pain subsides. Now it is only sore, not near as sharp and deafening to my mind.

I try to say thank you, but all that comes out is a painful choke. My face must've shown how frightened and confused I was, because she softened her gaze and stroked my neck. I flinched. The pain from my wings had drowned out all of my other scars, and I now realized there was a small gash in my throat. The same could be said for the rest of my body- only now, I was brave enough to look.

There's no way to describe what I thought. My body was no longer the blue it once was- or at least, most of it. Dark feathers blanketed me from head to tail, and I was covered in black scars. I assume the Skydancer's magic healed them, otherwise I would've died from blood loss by now, from the looks of it.

At least my chest feathers remain untainted, shimmering like stars in a cold night sky. The insides of my wings still glow as well, sparkling and representing where I came from.

But when I turn my neck to see the backsides... It appears as if the shade has stretched along their length, darkening the feathers. Some of the quills are missing, as if something had taken a large bite out of my wing. I'm amazed that the Skydancer could halt the pain this well.

I thank her with a blink, and curl up to rest.
