Fortis is true to his name,he will fight any dragon or beast to protect his friends and family, no matter there size or strength. But he is also smart,if at a disadvantage he will often use his speed and brains rather then his strength to outwit his opponents and allow his friends/family to get away before running himself.
Fortis has many friends in his clan as well as other clans Almost anyone who visits becomes a friend of his.

How he became clan leader
Fortis is a brave and strong dragon, who cares nothing about how he looks, he would give his life to save others, but at the start he never wanted to be a leader, the whole responsibility thing never felt ok with him, other dragons coming to him for advice - witch still happened mind you-, looking to him to know what to do, he never wanted any of that. Besides the current leader was fine, Trillum ran the clan like a father, treating everyone like the hatchings he raised, with his mate Sunbeam by his side.
It wasn't until his first battle that the clan noticed something special in the WildClaw, where other dragons tended to keep themselves from getting hurt, he seemed more worried about stopping those who where already injured or to young to fight getting hurt, even if it resulted in injury to his own self, but that was rare, because though he seemed unafraid of being hurt, it was also extremely hard to hit him in full battle mode.
It wasn't until the battle for the clans own survival that Fortis really shined, true for the first time in clan memory he had been seriously injured, almost fataly, but it had happened while he was protecting the nurcary with the eggs and hatchlings inside, a role that was hard to doge in, as the entrance was only as wide as the largest dragon, and if he had moved out of it, the attacker could of gotten in. The fact he had chosen to risk his own life to keep those still yonge or even unborn safe, spoke true to the clan, and though it took almost a mouth for him to fully heal, and the result was that he had a leg and eye scar to show for it, showed the clan that he was a leader in his heart and spirit.
When it was time for Trillum to step down as a leader, there was only one dragon they wanted to replace him, and that was Fortis, the dragon who never wanted to be one but had shown he could be. Though he didn't want it at first he didn't want to let the clan down so he took the leadership and so far no one has regretted the decision since.
