Biography

Corathan
Smuggler
Lawful Evil

PkKAmaj.png
While Corathan may appear to be your average coatl smith, on closer inspection one may notice that all is not as it seems. An astute eye may notice that the collection of weapons he brings to sell on each of his trading journeys is identical from one trip to the next, and that he always brings back far more than the weapons were worth -- and the weapons are brought back home too.

Along with the smuggled goods, Corathan also brings back a large amount of regular food from each of his trips. A good smuggler knows where the money is, and when your clan lives on a giant chuck of pink rock out in the middle of the ocean, it turns out that good food often comes at a premium.

Corathan's hammer is actually hollow; a quick twist of the head would reveal a horde of precious gemstones stashed inside.

Hardened from years of criminal activity, Corathan has thrown a number of his former allies to the harpies in order to save his own tail feathers. And those who have failed him one too many times have found themselves put on ice, literally. They might get better eventually. Maybe.

The only one he would never consider betraying is Jenna, the light of his life. Jenna would never betray him either. Probably.

He travels around Sornieth, claiming to sell a wide collection of weaponry, none of which he acquired by pleasant means. While he does sell the occasional weapon to an overeager customer (who'll learn in their first battle why Corathan shouldn't be trusted), his real goal is to buy all sorts of goods that the more scrupulous dragons of Sornieth wouldn't dare touch. At far less than they're worth, if Corathan gets his way. Those items are then brought back to the clan, where Jenna sells them to anyone who's in the know and willing to pay the ridiculous prices.

He's even been rumoured to have had a claw in the many events revolving around the Magmablood Rebuke. Considering his temperament, he's unlikely to have any sympathy for the rebels. Yet the forgemasters almost certainly hate him for repeated swindles and repeatedly tarnishing the name of their guild. (Also for occasionally physically tarnishing their products so that his look nicer.) Corathan is likely playing both sides, and doing so quite successfully.

The hat he wears is one he swindled off a pirate that operates in the area. Said pirate swore revenge, and thus Corathan is at fault for the seasonal pirate infestations the fortress is plagued with. Corathan doesn't mind — he's not a dragon that has to go fight them off, and without the pirates the market for giant cannonballs and other defensive supplies wouldn't be as active.

To keep up his disguise, Corathan acts as if he's always in good spirits. Thus he laughs at everyone's jokes. And his own jokes. And just whenever he wants to allay suspicion. But the only time he's actually laughing is when it's due to someone else's misfortune. After all, someone else falling behind just puts him farther ahead.

Since Vector does all the actual blacksmithing, Corathan has a lot of free time to do whatever he wants. For Corathan, this is living a life of luxury - surrounded by art, servants to dote on his every need (he needs to get some of those), and especially all the finest foods to eat.

What, you think he'd sell the good stuff to the clan?

He's responsible for bringing Tonukk to the clan, the young nocturne having somehow convinced Corathan to bring him all the way to the Isles without selling him off to anyone who seemed remotely interested. Tonukk's luck seems to have something to do with it, the pair having avoided an absurd number of dangers during their journey. Throughout his career, Corathan had learned never to throw away anything lucky, if only because you can pawn it off to some schmuck once you're done with it.

It wasn't until they'd finished the trip that Corathan realized Tonukk might actually have been bad luck all along. Most of those escapes had relied on his own talent, not any effort of Tonukk's. Not only that, but he returned to find Jenna in a sour mood and Zqfmgb poking his snout around in places where it didn't belong. Zqfmgb was quickly lead off the scent with purposely cryptic red herrings, but the damage was done. They'd have to actually try to hide their illicit dealings from now on.

Not that either of them are particularly worried about being captured and tried, but Silas can be annoyingly persistent when he's trying to fix things. Silas could have them sent off to the Fortress of Ends as far as Corathan cares, he's got enough contacts who owe him that he could probably stage a breakout in a matter of days. Honestly, Silas might be doing him a favour if he did so. The mystique of being someone who has broken out of the Icewarden's prison is rather tempting...
