Biography

ᛗᚨᚷᚾᛁ
The Strong

Magni thinks the world of his brother. They are the middle pair of Thor and Sif’s offspring: hatched in unison and almost twinned in looks. Ever since, they have been inseparable companions, despite their vastly different temperaments.

Where Magni is a gregarious and cheerful dragon, Modi by contrast is sullen and even mean, particularly to his brother. However, Magni refuses to allow Modi’s spiky demeanour to come between them. Any barbs and snide comments are easily shrugged off when he knows his brother doesn’t truly mean them. He finds himself often defending Modi’s behaviour, apologising for his harshness and smoothing things over when he upsets someone, but it’s not a task he minds. He’s glad to help him stay out of trouble.

For as long as he can remember, Magni wanted to follow in his parents’ clawprints and become one of the clan’s protectors. He and Modi used to sneak away from their hatchlinghood lessons and spy on their mother as she drilled the clan’s warriors. The two would covertly perform the exercises she set alongside the trainees – until their inevitable descent into juvenile rough-housing got them caught every time. Their persistence eventually paid off, however, and Sif allowed them an early place in her novice training group.

She warned both of her sons that she would not go easy on them, and that she expected them to keep up. Neither disappointed her.

Magni enjoyed the challenge of pushing himself to achieve more with each session, and quickly became adept with his mother’s martial arts: swordplay, archery and claw-to-claw fighting. More often than not, he was partnered with Modi, and the two spurred one another on in friendly competition to see who could be ‘the best’. Magni has always been the stronger of the two – he is in fact one of the strongest dragons in the clan – but what Modi lacks in muscle he makes up for in sheer ferocity.

To this day, when they spar together Magni usually finds himself thrown to the dust. Yet every time he cheers his brother’s accomplishment in beating him.

There are those among the clan’s warriors who consider Modi’s fighting forms unrefined and his tactics underhanded, perhaps even amounting to cheating – especially since Magni is one of the finest among them. However, Magni is grateful for the lessons he learns from his brother’s wild and furious technique. As he has pointed out to naysayers many times: in a real fight for his life, he can’t expect his opponent to play fair.

As Magni and Modi grew into adulthood, they were jointly made wardens of the clan’s eastern borders. Magni is delighted, as it means he can spend every day with his favourite dragon: his brother.

However, he appreciates that it’s not a role to be taken lightly, and nor does it mean fun and games all day every day for the two of them. Together, they are responsible for guarding against incursions from the Star Wood’s numerous dangers, as well as protecting the clan from hostile Beastclans and rival lairs who might make covert or open attacks. They have not yet been called upon to protect the clan from a major threat, for which Magni is equally relieved and disappointed.

When the pair venture into the Starwood Strand to make their rounds, Magni often sings to himself or chatters about whatever is on his mind as he wanders the familiar paths, with Modi his silent shadow in the trees close by. Magni greets anyone they encounter with warmth and a welcome to the lands of the Lundlaevungar, but these visitors may not even realise there is a second dragon keeping him company. Modi only shows himself when strangers prove to be a threat, or if Magni forces him out of hiding with an introduction – normally along the lines of, ‘My brother must be around here somewhere. Modi! Come and say hello!’

In addition to meeting travellers, they keep the routes in and out of the clan’s territory clear. Magni has been known to shift huge fallen branches with nothing more than brute strength when necessary. The two are also the clan’s primary game hunters and rarely return from patrol without adding to the clan’s food supplies.

The pair also deal with Blikjandabol.

This is by far Magni’s least favourite task. He generally likes and gets along with everyone he meets, at least on some level, but the Plague acolyte who makes his home somewhere amid the trees quite simply gives him the creeps. He lets Modi do the talking when they run into Blik on their patrols, and tries to stay upwind to avoid the stench of sickness.

Magni can sometimes be found running or flying laps of the training grounds, often carrying heavy loads. This is partly to improve his strength and endurance, but he also just finds it fun.
