Cassava
~ The Zealous Guard ~
Cassava was the first third-generation dragon born into the Stacked Deck, and an unexpected addition to the relatively scarce race of the Wildclaws at that. As such, his arrival was heralded before his birth, and well received shortly after. This reception did not die down as Cassava approached fledging, for even as a youngster he showed an inquisitive spirit and an impressive physique, echoing his father's accomplishment as a warrior clearly enough to warrant his acceptance as a permanent citizen of the colony. The eye of the clan remained keenly turned on Cassava as he approached maturation.
Cassava's vigour for learning and growing stronger led him into the arms of several role models- First his immediate family, and shortly in the rest of the clan, most of whom were pleased to see him apply himself to learning the duties of a clan guard as his father before him. His accomplishments in this field of expertise were well received, though his keenest observers noted an unusual trend in his development. Though Cassava was gradually weaning himself of instructors, the last one to remain was neither his father Jung, nor the officer Thiozonide, but the clan leader, Amnion, who had not cared for him any more nor any less than she did other hatchlings.
Those that continued to watch him after his graduation saw that Cassava's final changes were not complete. Though he became a proficient fighter, the Wildclaw's friendships became quiet and sparse. His spare time was increasingly spent in constructing for himself a masked suit of armour, a tool of silent intimidation. Suspicions that his admiration of Amnion had become a subservient obsession became substantiated, though Amnion neither acknowledged nor discouraged the idea, and Cassava himself spoke so little that the matriarch's nickname for him took hold among the clansfolk.
Cassava Switchblade is now Amnion's most loyal follower and defender, though he holds few other relationships. Some wondered if she had known of this finality all along as she passively watched him progress. Others shoulder the guilt of the more subtle explanation- That it was the clan's own obsession with Cassava as a figure that drove him to gravitate later towards the only one who treated him as an individual, and become something as uncaring as Amnion had justifiably been to him long ago.
Cassava Switchblade still sees regular duty with his father Jung, as both remain prominent in the Stacked Deck's military. Cassava's withdrawal from the social scene has been the only source of deep upset in Jung's genial life, and though he continues to entreat others to try and interact with the inquisitive, energetic dragon behind the mask of service, he is fighting a losing battle over an identity Cassava has already settled in to.
