Ilarnek
~ The Decadent Exorcist ~
A eternal law of communal life runs such: As population increases, needs which are considered negligibly small in the individual accumulate until their meeting provides a viable niche of occupation in the community. And as population increases yet further, the cost of not meeting these needs grows noticeable. Among the dragons of the Stacked Deck Clan, Ilarnek is possibly the most illustrative manifestation of such a niche.

Though the residence of the clan, as with any permanent settlement, has always attracted ghosts and spirits to linger within its walls, these unusual denizens and their activities were not, at first, prominent enough for the community to make any effort at maintaining a healthy relationship with them. As the lair grew in age, unhappy deaths, secretive rituals, and bad memories grew unchecked alongside the living. Spiritual mischief became common and coordinated, but the habituated populace, to their own disadvantage, never considered that they required the services of an exorcist. After all, they had a priest, Divi. What more good could the oft-exploited prestige of divine and demidivine practitioners do them?

It was the memory of the clan's matriarch and founder Amnion that realised the need where all others had grown accustomed to the lingering touch of the other side. Having watched the community grow from nothing, Amnion had long and suspiciously tracked the growing number of spirits, and at last selected from her own ranks Ilarnek, a promising hatchling whom she sent away to study and return as an exorcist.

The education of Ilarnek was long and distant, and having departed at such a young age, recognised for no importance by anyone but Amnion, his return was little heralded. Rather, his immediate admission back into the clan's permanent members despite his entirely foreign upbringing, and the nature of his role being unasked for by all but the matriarch, raised suspicion around him. Ilarnek dismissed it, laughing- And, indeed, it was ultimately Ilarnek's personality that drove him to almost unanimous dislike among the clan.

The exorcist, in his familiarity with the paranormal, seemed to reject all things on the mortal plane bar base pleasure. A glutton, a gambler, full of schadenfreude and apathy towards society, most considered Ilarnek a leech and a con.

But Ilarnek's decadent behaviour among the living was rooted deeply in his role. In rejecting the subtle things of flesh and blood, Ilarnek opened his heart fully to the words and emotions of the clan's spirits. Though they were many, they were lonely; And though they were few, they felt crowded. Ilarnek entered the world of the unseen as a gentle and closely listening saviour, building trust and companionship with them, guiding them on in ways that could only be learned on his side of mortality. Ilarnek has never considered himself an exorcist by force, but by therapy; And since he first forsook the company of the living, the ghosts of the Stacked Deck have been calmer and happier than ever they had ever been before, and though the living reject him, Ilarnek knows that they, too, are better off for what he has done for them.

Ilarnek is the only resident of the Stacked Deck to be in conscious association with Zhonya, the once-living statue. To preserve her trust and the comfort she gains from a shroud of mystery, he acts cryptically when questioned about her, throwing off an air of delusion. Beneath the facade of whimsy, however, Ilarnek recognises the plight of one caught so uncomfortably between life and non-life, and continues to guide Zhonya on her path to internal peace. She considers him her only confidante, and far from being an only resort, genuinely enjoys his company, though her physical form forbids her from interacting with him on the physical plane.
