The golden fox and silver wolf
One day during my travels i happened across a village deep in the woods. In my exhausted state I hurried to locate a inn or tavern to rest my head. The buildings of the village all looked fairly old but the inn that i found was especially ancient. It used methods of architecture not seen for many a century. The stone steps leading into the house had been worn down over the years by rain and feet. Over the door a sign hung. It depicted a wolf and a fox entwined in a never ending circle with the nose of one up against the tail of the other.
When i entered the building i was greeted by a man so wrinkled and aged that i would not be surprised to hear that he was well past 5 score years in age. I sat down in front of the bar and he pulled out a glass asking what drink I was looking for. Not wanting to be rude i requested for a small glass of rum. The old man pulled out a bottle that was polished and well cared for. The label however showed a date from 1410 a full 300 years ago. The old man poured out two glasses of the liqueur and sat down beside me taking one glass for himself. After a few sips he began to tell a story too fantastical to believe. "My time on this earth is about to come to an end. I have been running this inn for my whole life. And my father ran it before me. This inn has been in my family for generations too many to count. But soon it will close it's doors for the last time. You see, once this was a thriving town but that was long ago now. I have no children to take up the job after me and business is too slow to be able to sell it to any other. This rum you and I are drinking was pulled from the wreckage of the cart of my ancestors brother. It has been passed down from generation to generation along with the tale of the gold fox and the silver wolf. Many years ago, back when this inn was brand new, A man was traveling through the forest. He was a merchant and on this particular trip he was carrying rum to the inn that his brother had just started. He was traveling with his newly wed wife, a bright and cheerful lass with hair so gold it rivaled the metal in it's beauty. The merchant was hurrying for storms were approaching. The sun was blocked by great billowing clouds and he could hear thunder, each peal of it getting closer than the last. The wheel of his cart ran over a ledge and came crashing down. In normal circumstances it would of been fine but today his horse was being pushed extra fast and his cart had a far greater load than normal. So the axle split. The merchant and his wife were thrown off. The great wheel of the cart when spinning over the merchant and landed on his wife, his greatest treasure. The man ignored his many wounds and with strength born of desperation he lifted the wheel off of his wife. But it was too late. She was already gone.
The man could not accept it. Disoriented he picked up her body and with tears running down his eyes ran into the woods calling for help. Lost and broken he collapsed in the deepest part of the forest. His eyes were drooping and he could feel the tendrils of death caressing him and welcoming him into their arms. But before his eyes closed the last time a great wolf stalked into the glade. The size of a building with a coat of gold and silver it picked up the man and his wife and carried them into a realm where no human has ever entered. The wolf put down the man and talked to him with a voice that was like a forest talking all at once. There were birds and leaves swaying and brooks bubbling all in that great voice. It told the man about how it was the spirit of the forest. How for many centuries it had watched over the woods alone. It told the merchant that It was tired and it wanted to finally die. It offered the man to bring his wife back and offer them it's immortality on the condition that they watch the forest in it's place. The man didn't hesitate a moment. To this day if you find the deepest part of the forest and you are very lucky, you can still see the silver wolf and the gold fox as they watch over the vast forest given to them by that spirit all those years ago." The old man sighed and put down his glass. "This story has been in my family for generations and now that my time has come, i hand it to you to keep it alive". The old man walked into his room ignoring the money i had placed on the table. After a few minutes of me sitting there contemplating what i had just heard I noticed the sound of the inn door opening. A man with silver hair had walked in with his stunning companion. "The old man is in his room" I said. "I think that they are closing soon" The man ruffled his wife's golden hair and grinned wolfishly, "I'm just here to pick up someone who has been serving us for many years". And promptly entered the room with the old man. After they had been in the room some time i decided to check in on them. There was no-one waiting for me, only the body of the inn keeper smiling peacefully in death.
Heavy eyes
The sky is red today, stained by the blood of my brothers in war. I'm lying on my back staring at the sky. It's the middle of winter but i feel no cold. I'm just barely aware that where my legs once were there are only stumps remaining but it doesn't worry me. I feel warm and comfortable. Somewhere in the back my mind i know that i would be leaving mother alone but it's all i can do to care. My eyes feel heavy, I'm so tired. Strange, It's only been two hours since I awoke and by now my blood should be pumping with adrenaline. But this bed is so comfortable. I open my eyes and i see my brother. We are going to the forest to find some frogs. Mother calls out to me for me to bring the lunch she had packed to our father in his fields. I'd go but I'm so tired my eyes are like lead. I open my eyes and I see my Father in front of me showing me how to work the land, I'm taller now. I see him get older right before my eyes as if years are passing. He wants me to do something but I only want to sleep. I open my eyes and see my older brother head off to college. It feels like only yesterday when he and I were rolling fighting over who gets to be Peter Pan and who has to be hook. But today he is heading off to school a full man. I know that I will join him soon but I just can't find the energy. I open my eyes and see my father lying in a hospital bed he murmured that he loves me and then the heart beat monitor goes flat. I open my eyes and i see my friend go off to war, I blink and i see the letters telling me of their deaths. I open my eyes and i see my mother crying at the kitchen table with a telegraph in her hands. I blink and see my brother's grave. I open my eyes and see the person at the counter stamping my certificate of entry into the army. I open my eyes and i see a red sky above me. My eyes are so heavy, I'm so tired I'm so alone. I close my eyes and see darkness as it embraces me.
The edge of death
Dancing on the edge of death
You gaze into the mists of the world
As you look from left to right
You see life and you see death
Crowds gaze back at you from either side
But you cannot join them
You are alone you are scared
Dancing on the edge of death
A figure is lurking out there
Just out of sight, laughing
You can never fully see him
The longer you are there
The sharper his features become
A skeleton out of a nightmare
He has come knocking on your door
Dancing on the edge of death
You see a white light
It looks comforting and safe
You need to go there
You turn away from one side
To the side of death you reach
You feel life pulling you back
But you want to go to that white light
You fall off of the edge of death.
The beast
The mountain stood tall and proud, its shadow cutting through the countryside shading the forest below against the striking sun. It looked down, watching the movements of shadowy figures dancing in the trees. As it watched, the figures became sharper until it could see their faces as they laughed and danced. The group of people down below were having a feast. They were dancing around a great corpse as they lifted a young man on their shoulders and chanted his name: Gurumarra.
The mountain stood there gazing at the scene, recalling the event that took place only a few days earlier.
Gurumarra straightened as he wiped the sweat from his forehead. He had been chasing the beast for many days now. The beast that had been attacking his kin was one of monstrous proportions.
It was a devil unlike any seen before in the land. The trail of death it left was not hard to follow. Gurumarra was the strongest man alive; he could tear up trees with his bare hands and could run day and night without halting. His face was covered with the warpaint of one who was on the road for vengeance, but in his mind’s eye he could only see the shed blood of his family.
He stalked through the forest, smooth as a Tasmanian tiger.
The beast was not far away now, Gurumarra readied his weapon. His heart pounded in fear. No-one who had challenged the beast had lived to tell the tale. He steeled himself for the fight ahead, knowing full well that he would likely not survive. He murmured under his breath “This is for you my sister.” After a few moments of pause he pushed through a wall of leaves into a glade beyond.
The beast stood in the middle of the clearing. Its eyes glowed red with bloodcurdling rage.
A weaker man would have cowered before those eyes, but Gurumarra stood firm.
The beast took the first step. Gurumarra could see the muscles ripple under its skin as it stalked towards him with a grace unbecoming of its size.
Suddenly it lunged forward with no warning. It opened its jaws wide, throwing itself at the tall man. Gurumarra leapt to the side, his swift movements proving his name was not just for show.
The beast sailed pasted the spot where Gurumarra’s head had been only moments earlier.
It pivoted around as soon as its feet touched the ground. Not even pausing for a second, it lunged again. This time Gurumarra met it head on, holding his spear out horizontally from his body and catching the beast in its mouth. Both of them struggled, trying to push the other to the ground.
The monster jerked it’s head violently to the left, throwing the man aside. It ran at him and slashed his face with its claws. Gurumarra fell to the ground. Hot brands of burning pain seared across his face and he tasted the metallic tang of blood. He was in immense agony and couldn’t find the strength to continue. For the next moment, time froze. He saw before him his sister. He recalled the night he had lost her and sorrow filled his heart. He reached out to her but she shook her head and said “Now is not your time to die, get up and fight”. Strength filled Gurumarra and he rolled away, clutching his face.
Before he could fully get up the beast had already lunged for the third time. Its face twisted into the cruel smile of victory. Gurumarra was just one out of many challengers to fall before its claws.
With his newfound might Gurumarra pushed out his spear with the tip facing the monstrous jaw.
The beast died before it had a chance to touch the ground, the spear impaled through its head.
Gurumarra dropped to the ground weary and sore. He wrapped his head with mud and leaves to stop the bleeding. Just before he dropped, he pulled out a sea shell and let loose a victorious sound.
In his dreams he watched as his sister faded away; she could now rest in peace.
When he woke up his family were surrounding him, praising his mighty works. They danced into the night, celebrating the defeat of the beast.
And the mountain stood there watching the full thing. It was not surprised or amazed and it did not forget the tale. You would be surprised by how many stories a mountain has seen.
The Dwalphin
This is a tale of the mythical creature the dwalphin
Once apon a time some adventurures were in the midst of a desert hunting a sand worm, a gread beast that travels through the sand
Then, one of those travelers (who is a dwarf) dove under the sand to escape the creature who was apon them.
He rolled a nat 20 so he got pretty deep.
The adventurers had been in the belly of the sand worm moments prior thinking it a cave, after a moment of irritation the sand worm barfed them up (For this the dwarf had rolled a nat 20 doing a double flip and landing on his feet)
Only the elf remained in the belly of the beast as he had explored deeper riding on his telekinetic disc.
The elf had found a weird red glowing object within the belly of the sand worm (He was unaware that he was in the worm at that point still) and so he stabbed it.
The sand worm writhed, barfed the elf up and dived.
Unfortunately for the dwarf, the dwarf was under the sand worm when it dived and got knocked out.
The adventurers knew the dwarf was there and started digging frantically to rescue the dwarf before he died.
Under the sand the dwarf rolled a saving throw.
And got a 20.
This led to him trying to dig out.
He rolled a 20
The DM at this point was so impressed that he used the hand of DMery to form the dwarf into a new creature, a dwalphin.
The dwarf breached the desert sand in a graceful arc a full 2 meters away from where his team mates were digging.
He proceeded to do a few typical dolphin tricks diving in and out of the sand and doing a few flips.
From that moment on any time the dwarfs feet touch sand, he gets +2 to acrobatics.
The island in the sky
Nphilium had been traveling for many a week into the vast unknown as he was want to do.
The luscious grey and blue foliage of the plants around around the pool parted as he pushed his way forward. clambering up a stout tree he scouted the area scanning the horizon for the telltale signs of white leaves.
The rings of colors became apparent then, green on the outside turning slowly blue then into grey and right in the center of this circular rainbow were the bright vibrant white trees he was looking for.
He dropped to the forest floor and pushed on.
As he continued to get closer to these vibrant plants the air grew moist and heavy until he was directly in the center.
The air quivered with motion as pools of fish swam above his head and a great white whale swirled lazily through the air. Nphilium dropped his weapon and bag and leaped upwards as far as he could. Once, twice, to no avail he pushed against the weight on his shoulders. Then on the third try, his hands broke the surface of the heavenly lake floating above him.
Swimming upwards past the many white fish that passed him by as they moved slowly upwards alongside him, curious of this new entry to their mystical world.
For years it seemed like he was swimming fighting against the pressure as it slowly increased the further he ascended. the air being pushed into his lungs grew wetter and wetter until he was almost swimming through water.
Finnaly when he could no longer breath and his muscled ached with the strain he breached the surface of a great lake. Water extended for as far as the eye could see dipping down and curving off at the very edges of reality.
And there, right in the center, close to Nphiliums entrance to this strange world, floated an island.
The island was covered in the brightest of pink trees showing no signs of the white branches that were deep below.
Nphilium Swam to the island and pulled himself onto the shore.
He scanned the chunk of land that seemed to pull up the great expanses of water beneath it.
Near his landing a small dock lay, attached to the rock with miniature logs and pieces of twine.
He stood up and saw strewn before him a farm and a house the reached up to his knees. There coming from the farm a tiny bright pink person rushed out with a tiny pink sword waving it angrily at Nphilium shouting in some unknown language. With next to no hesitation Nphilium Reached out and grabbed the man around the waist and ignoring the pangs of pain pulled the sword from his grip and snapped a vibrant branch from a nearby tree.
He then carefully placed the strange small man on the ground and turned and dived back into the water.
Swimming back the way he came, down through water that slowly became less and less thick until he was swimming through air.
Finally, he reached the place he had leapt into the water from dropping to the ground back into familiarity. He picked up his bag and sword, deposited his new treasure into the former and continued into the great unknown.
The uphill stream
Nphilium cut through the foliage as he made his way through the great unknown.
The sounds of singing grew closer as he moved forward.
When his sword cut through nothing he stopped, and surveyed what lay before him. A creak of water lay babbling and singing dashing across the rocks as it wound its way up a hill.
The water moving against gravity sang a peculiar song as it cut its way through the forest floor.
Nphilium stopped and put his lips to the water, catching it was it splashed and played.
Standing, he turned his gaze to the route it took following its course, first with his eyes, then with his legs.
as he pushed his way through the forest following the stream he came across many creature, large and small catching a taste of the pure water. the ground became steeper and steeper as soon the stream was a raging waterfall, rushing upwards up a cliff.
Nphilium held his breath and jumped into the waterfall, rushing upwards until it pulled him into a cave in its rush towards whatever destination was in store.
Nphilium stood and wrung the water from his cloak and bag before heading further into the cave. Soon it was too dark to see but he followed the sound of the water as it soldiered on in the dark. The darkness gave way to light as a cavern made itself know by the means of glowing crystals. The crystals became denser the deeper Nphilium went.
The constant song the water had been singing was coming to a crescendo as Nphilium saw the pool to which the water was running.
There, in the center of the water a small pipe floated as if dropped by the water itself. From it came music of such beauty that the traveler had to pause to listen before diving into the water. He grabbed the pipe and pulled it out. The singing grew faint and in the place of the pipe and read was forming to replace what was lost.
Nphilium put the pipe covered in color and holes into his bag and left the cave.
Ready to continue once again, into the great unknown
The Great plateau.
Nphilium looked over the land from the impossibly high clifftop
Far over the endless expanses of trees and rivers winding across the landscape he saw a great mountain.
He took a few steps back from the yawning abyss and ran forward, throwing himself into the loving embrace of wind and sky.
While plummeting to the ground he pulled on a string attached to his backpack and great wings of wood and leather uncurled like a butterfly from a cocoon.
They caught on the air and he zipped forward, zooming over the landscape.
The trees and rivers that had caught his eye from a distance rushed underneath him strange creatures looking up at the sight of this strange mechanical bird.
Other birds of a more natural nature flew alongside the oddity and eyed Nphilium up and down before leaving to look for creatures of a more edible constitution.
The mountain approached swiftly as he lost height.
Before he could crash into the side Nphium pulled out a small pink branch from his bag. Suddenly the air grew thick and wet and Nphilium slowed rapidly until he came to a stop, suspended hovering in the semi-liquid just above the trees at the base of the mountain. when he had completely stopped Nphilium returned the branch to its home in his bag suddenly dropping from the sky as the heaviness in the air disappeared.
He snatched a branch as he dropped past and climbed to the safety of the forest floor.
The nest of dead leaves met him, slightly greyed from their recent ordeal.
Taking only a moment to catch his breath, Nphilium turned his attention to the great mountain that lay before him.
after climbing for hours the face grew steeper by the step until Nphilium cam across a great cliff that went on as far as the eye could see.
Stopping to drop his bag he pulled out a pipe with bands of colour winding their way from one end to the other. Riddled with holes of varying sized. Putting his mouth to the largest hole he blew into it drawing out long melancholy tones from the depth of the pipe.
His fingers dancing across the pipe a strange melody of mourning and loss appeared, the shrubbery around him bowed down and the rocks wept with tears of sorrow.
Great movements shifted under the earth as massive moles pulled themselves out of the cliff face to surround Nphilium and weep. Their great deep voices crying out in sadness.
Then the tune changed, no longer was the music sad but joyful the colors of the mountain grew more vibrant, the rocks started dancing and the trees pulled out their roots to join them.
The massive mole creatures too stopped their crying and lifted Nphilium on their shoulders carrying him back into their caves where they feasted and drank for hours.
In the dead of night when all the moles were asleep Nphilium stopped his playing and Sneaked out into the network of caves that they had carried him through. He found his way into a great underground cavern with glowing bugs hanging onto the walls provided a source of light. Nphilium went to one of these spots of light and pulled out his sword. The tiny glowing bug was hanging onto a massive root which Nphilium grasped and pulled out a length of, promtly chopping it off.
Putting his sword in his sheath Nphilium left to re-enter the system of tunnels.
Choosing every path that sloped upwards Nphilium made his way up the mountain, the higher he got, the more the root worm glowed.
Finally he broke the surface of the ground and poked his head out onto a great plateau. Releasing the bug back into the earth he gave the root a home in his bag before turning to the sight in front of him.
righ in the middle of the plane on the mountain there was a hill with grass surrounding it. Nphilium approached the hill and saw curled up at its center a crater with a small stone that glowed with many colors. He gently picked up the stone and placed it in his bag.
Then, with no hesitation ran to the edge of the plateau and leapt off, back into the great unknown.
