Valka was left behind by her biological parents as they were traveling through the Southern Icefield, an egg they thought would never hatch. That abandoned egg was discovered by Marburg, and though it was nearly larger than she was at the time, she brought it home to the Firnhold vault, and there she coaxed it to hatch. Valka immediately imprinted on Marburg and Taeven as her parents, and even now doesn't seem to realize how strange and unlikely that is. Many dragons are unsettled by Valka. She speaks in an odd sing-song tone. Her eyes always seem slightly unfocused, as if she's looking at something no one else can see - when she actually does focus in on someone, it's almost more alarming, a little too intense and strangely unblinking. She is obsessed with collecting things - sometimes strange and exotic, sometimes utterly mundane - and usually returns from her wanderings with bags bulging with treasures. From a very young age, she began making excursions away from the vault: first only to the base of the mountains, to the dens of the Frostflower tribe, and then farther and farther afield. Each time she would bring back souvenirs of her explorations: pinecones and rocks, dried flowers and bone splinters, all of which she proudly displayed in the little corner of the vault she had claimed. Eventually, she tired of the lands close to home, and ventured out to the Fortress of Ends, where she began unearthing stranger things, supplies scavenged from frozen bodies, crystals and fossils discovered in distant caves, and ancient relics excavated from the ice. Some of the vaultkeepers see this work as useful, bringing them ever more knowledge lost to time, but many others are concerned about what else she might find digging around in places the Icewarden meant to keep secret... These days, she spends more time among those frozen prisons than she does at home in the vault, and sometimes it seems that each time she comes back from her travels, she's a little stranger than before. |
