None of these dragons knew how to cook. Every single one of their taste buds must have been broken, since all the foods they liked to eat were unseasoned. Many of them even ate without table etiquette! They often scarfed down meats and fish raw, and didn’t even bother washing the vegetables at all. The insects these barbarians ate--it was absolutely appalling! The nerve of these dragons and their apathetic attitudes towards fine dining. Mung Daal would show them exactly how to enjoy a meal.

And show them he did. He showed them what fish with too much seasoning tasted like. He showed them what happened when one waited too long to put fruits to use, making dishes others knew were spoiled but Mung somehow did not. He showed them wilted leaves, dry and tough meats, and insects cooked so thoroughly the spiders were dust. Mung Daal was . . . not a good chef, but at least his presentation was on point. That was the only thing saving his restaurant, the Bamboolean, from going under.

Without assistants checking over his cooking, Mung Daal would not have a job. Which he probably shouldn’t, anyway. Whenever someone insulted his food, the striped coatl puffed up a little more and stalked back to the kitchen, angrily throwing random items together, much to the fear of the assistants. Sometimes they thought that he may burst one day with all the hot air pressing on his skull, and several of them had a running bet on when it would happen. Though that may not be the worst thing in the world, since they would all be spared such awful cooking, and one dragon would end up very rich.

____The door to the kitchen burst open. The other assistants dropped their utensils with a clatter at the sudden sound. One of the newer recruits, who they were certain was going to get the chop soon since he corrected Mung Daal to his face, raced into the kitchen, dancing around other dragons without even brushing their wingtips. “A CRITIC IS HERE!” he screeched in panic, claws scoring down his face.

The others froze. Mung Daal began barking orders at his assistants, and each one lurched into motion at the sound of their names. They threw together a dish, carefully fixing Mung’s mistakes when he wasn’t watching, and clustered around him with bated breath when the coatl artfully arranged everything on a dish. Mung Daal strode out to the critic, assistants behind him, set the dish in front of her, and waited as she ate the meal. She dabbed at her lips and proclaimed with a nod, “this is . . . delicious!”

____Mung Daal hated sharing Skyloft with other eateries. There was the Collapsible Tavern and the Top-up Ramen Shop on the other end of the breezeway. And they got more business than the Bamboolean. Mung gave the owners of those businesses stank eyes every time they came to eat at his restaurant. They ignored him, paying attention to the dragons they came with, but their manners were always subdued whenever Mung Daal was around.

One day Mung left the Bamboolean to find Beryl Sunriser, Maruchan, and Top Ramen waiting outside for him. In their arms were drinks and bowls of ramen. They forced him back inside to sample all the dishes they’d brought. After some bickering and force-feeding, Mung yanked the tankards and bowls away from the offending dragons and ate the food himself. Slowly, he chewed. Maybe--maybe--he could learn to at least tolerate the other businesses.
