B I O G R A P H Y

She hated being coddled. Mestrel was never allowed to leave the laboratory without permission. She found this wildly unfair, even though she knew her mother just worried about her. But being stuck inside all day gave her plenty of time to work on perfecting her alchemical recipes, adding vibrancy to apparel, true life to familiars, and flashiness to battle stones. She really enjoyed tormenting the familiars the mercenary brought her for reagents.

But that didn’t compare to actually exploring Skyloft. Since she barely ever got to leave, she barely knew the other dragons and shops they owned. Milan herself never even bothered to take a look around the alchemy expansion of the lab, to check for safety shortcuts--she sent the mercenary to do that job for her. She offered the cursed guardian a free drink for overlooking the pile of emperor potions in the corner, which he gladly accepted.

Another thing Mestrel enjoyed was arguing with her mother. She thought Grinder was especially hilarious when she was angry, but she was careful not to push her buttons too much. She didn’t want her only pastime to be taken away from her. But Mestrel wanted to see what was outside of the lab. She wanted to breathe fresh air, not the chemically-treated air in the lab. She wanted to go shopping and to be a girl without having to make all her apparel herself. Maybe she’d sneak out and see Todd and August one day. . . .

____There was only one cursed window in Mestrel’s portion of the alchemy expansion. She looked out it whenever she had a free hour or ten, since it took a while for the cauldron to reduce and reform whatever she was experimenting with. She liked to pretend that a cute boy dragon was going to pass by her window and see her forlorn expression and come sweep her off her claws, like in the stories Loretta told her as a hatchling.

But that would never happen. She had too many customers to attend to, and too many cauldrons to watch. She had yet to blow anything up, though, which she prided herself greatly for, since her bumbling father’s reputation often preceded hers. She just wanted her mother to understand that cooping her up so much was bound to have adverse effects on her brain, being around all those chemicals all day. She couldn’t wait until she could have free will.

_Shopping Spree_

____On the rare occasions Mestrel got to leave her lab, she made sure to pack a heavy purse of treasure with her. She strolled around the different shopfronts and admired all the colorful fashions August had created, the heavenly scents of ramen coming from Maruchan’s shop, and the starry-eyed dragons exiting Ziggy’s mystical tent. Mestrel adored the breezeway and wanted nothing more than to just stand here in the middle of it all.

But Mestrel had only learned how to treat other dragons the way her mother treated her. She often upset and offended all the dragons she encountered with backhanded compliments or poor shopping etiquette. She liked to believe that her poor manners weren’t her fault, since her mother or Loretta should have taught her. Lots of dragons complained to Grinder about this, so instead of figuring out how to fix the problem, Mestrel’s time outside was severely limited.
