Heshira had always had a fascination with history. One could learn many stories by the objects a society treasured and loathed. When she was little, Heshira received many toolkits for finding and preserving historical artifacts and used them until they all broke. She spent many afternoons in history and science museums, playing with the archaeology playsets the museums had. There was no satiating her lust for ancient knowledge. Victors may have written history, Heshira often said, but time and skilled hands would tell the truth. And, most times, the truth was not what the victors wrote.

Heshira was a firm believer in the principle of “to the victor goes the spoils.” But this mainly applied to items left behind by civilizations long past. This society wiped itself out in civil war a thousand years ago, but this neat sword a soldier used was still pretty sharp. Heshira could save it for Beryl, if a museum didn’t want it. She’d brush off the dust and tap off the mud and refurbish it before giving it to a friend or selling it to a museum. She needed to make money for herself, after all. Nothing came free in life. Except maybe ancient swords.

After being thoroughly cursed, Heshira turned away from physical objects and towards rituals and spells--anything to indicate curses and hexes. If she could fix her hands, maybe her guild would let her back in. The thought was perhaps too optimistic, but it was worth a shot. And, anyways, if she could locate the ritual used to curse that blasted tomb, she may be able to reverse and prevent her guild from being cursed ever again. Again, maybe too optimistic, but worth a shot nonetheless.

____One day she stumbled upon a guild who was set to dig somewhere in the Forum of the Obscured Crescent. There were rumors of a tomb nearby that housed a noble family that had gone missing during the Third Age. Heshira was chosen to go along, and the group found the tomb with ease. But breaking its seal was not easy and would not come without a price. Heshira tapped and chiseled until the door came open, and the tomb was open to all. The expedition took only three months to explore and recover artifacts.

But taking a slab had cursed Heshira with hands that sometimes stopped working. Her motor skills were not as honed as they should be for her age, and so she often lost her grip on important relics and shattered them, forever lost to time. Rarely she would hear a slow, echoing voice, whispering "return the slab." When she had broken a fifth and final pot, her archaeologists guild had thrown her to the wind. Heshira stole the slab, then spent many days and nights wandering Sornieth, looking for a way to reverse the curse, but none have been able to decipher it. It seemed she was stuck dropping things for the rest of her life.

____Archaeology was not an action movie. Boulder traps didn’t exist in most tombs and catacombs that Heshira was sent to explore. Curses were rare, but not unheard of. Only a year after joining the Archaeology Guild of the Wood, Heshira was sent on an expedition to the Ashfall Wastes, where a golden idol supposedly rested in a hidden catacomb system near a volcano. This particular idol was only discussed in myths and legends, and many believed it was a myth itself. But someone had supposedly found it.

The expedition set off immediately. The catacombs were a maze, and the group lost two archaeologists traversing its labyrinth. When finally they reached the idol, they found it sitting alone on a pedestal in the middle of the room. A brave nocturne swiped it into his bag, and the cavern began to rumble. The back of the room opened, and a giant boulder came barreling towards the unsuspecting group. They fled the catacombs. The boulder slammed shut into its doorway. When it rolled to a stop, they found the nocturne and idol flattened on the boulder before them. Heshira suspected the idol would always remain a legend now.
