➵ Because it's not just that Velveteen's a less-than-reliable leader; he's also so, so detrimentally optimistic (with good reason—the universe just tends to look out for fools. Unfortunately, that same luck doesn't usually extend to those who choose to do as he does)
➵ Consequently, Velveteen has a hard time grasping the true extent of a dire situation, and he knows that it makes his decisions both short-sighted and dangerous
➵ he can be an idiot sometimes, but he's nothing if not deeply empathetic
