One of Basil’s black pieces hop-scotches its way from one end of the board to the other, taking several of Murmur’s white pieces with it.
“King me,” Basil yawns. He flips a page in his yellowed tome, barely looking up at his opponent. “How—” Murmur starts, jaw hinging open and closed in bewilderment. “How did you—” “I’ve never met anyone who more fundamentally misunderstands checkers gameplay,” Basil shrugs. “Your move.” Murmur resists the urge to overturn the board. It’s ceramic, and the courtyard has seen more than enough checker shards this week. Hesitantly, he moves one of his remaining four pieces backwards, mentally planning a last-ditch evacuation of his surviving troops. In one fell swoop, Basil captures two of Murmur’s pieces with his newly-crowned king. “Do you cede?” he asks, bored. “I guess,” Murmur sniffs, eyes beginning to water. Before Basil can even set his book down, he dissolves into sobs so earth-shattering that the courtyard seems to quake beneath their feet. “Why—why are you doing that?” Basil stammers, brows drawn low in concerned terror. His hands hover over Murmur’s back and shoulders, caught between letting the crying naturally run its course and offering a sympathetic pat or two. Basil retracts his hands—it doesn’t seem as if a pat or two will cut it. “You made Murmur cry?!” comes an accusation from the entrance gate. Basil whirls and comes face-to-face with an incredulous Chamomile, a wicker basket of blackberries tucked under her spindly left arm. She sweeps the weeping Murmur into a bone-crushing embrace and rocks him gently until he quiets. To Basil’s mounting embarrassment, it doesn’t take long. When Murmur’s hiccups recede into deep, even breaths, Chamomile deposits him back in his chair, smacks Basil upside the head, and vanishes as suddenly as she came. Questions stream through Basil’s head too quickly to voice them. Is this a regular thing? What did I miss? Since when have Murmur and Chamomile been friends? Basil wants to ask, but instead says, “I think we should see other people.” They spend two miserable weeks avoiding each other before getting back together for the third time. | _______ |

A dedicated scholar and writer, Basil is always quick to establish himself as the smartest dragon in the room. His impatience for the incompetence of others makes him, in many ways, matriarch Caieta's best friend. The two are often seen conspiring together, usually over a large conference table that lesser dragons wouldn't dare to even dream of sitting at.
Predictably, Basil doesn't have many other friends—his tendency to treat everyone like an idiot doesn't really endear him to strangers, and it is said that Caieta's air of vague contempt and Basil's pointed ridicule together are enough to reduce any dragon to a blubbering mess. | _______ |
