"Yes, I just received a letter from him this morning," the large Bogsneak replied, his solemn tone and churning feelings of confusion and betrayal making Ayrkas's heart ache. She could only imagine what this meant for him, considering he had been lied to by the dragon with whom he had trained closely, shared living quarters, and developed a father-son relationship for years. After a few moments of contemplation, a second thought crossed her mind that she simply had to ask despite all of the hesitation and guilt she could feel emanating from the drake before her. "Pardon me, King Inoso, but what does this have to do with me?" The long, drawn out pause followed by a deep sigh was definitely not a good sign. Gingerly, Inoso pulled a piece of parchment from a pouch he carried, untying the bow of twine that kept it neatly rolled. When he looked up to meet Ayrkas's eyes, his gaze pierced her to the core with deep sorrow. "King Inoso, ruler of the Z'Arduani kingdom," he began, lifting the parchment to his face in order to read it more clearly. "I regret to inform you that Atsilka, archduke of the Z'Arduani monarchy and ambassador of the Virulent Alliance — my son — has been killed in battle. In usual terms of agreement this would terminate the obligations of alliance between the two clans, but I, Aleksander, former leader of the Z'Arduani and curator of the Alliance, hereby declare that I shall personally uphold the terms of agreement with Clan Virulent through the prosperity of my own flesh and blood." But there was something else that Inoso wasn't saying. Deeper, behind the initial shock of the confirmation of Aleksander's existence and the solemn news of Atsilka's death, Ayrkas could sense something more. Gently, she prompted, "Is there something else, King Inoso?" Reluctantly, the large Bogsneak lowered the piece of parchment to eye level for Ayrkas, pointing with a claw to the final few paragraphs of the letter. "This," he began, tapping the paper thoughtfully, "This is a death sentence for our clan." Panicked, the Skydancer frantically scanned each paragraph, her eyes hastening with every word she read. However, Inoso's deep, rumbling voice piped up again, preventing her from finishing her read-over of the letter. What he said would resonate with the dragoness for years to come. "Ayrkas, this is war."
