Euterpe drummed her paws on the desk in front of her, the quill she was supposed to be using flicking from side to side in its inkwell. In front of her, her mother, Alusair, was turned away, writing a diagram on the board. She was bored. So bored. Usually, her parents let her do her lessons outside, or somewhere interesting, so at least she wouldn’t be completely unfocused. But the nature of today’s lesson prevented that, and she wasn’t sure whether she should be mad about it or simply resigned. The reason for her dismay wasn’t too far away. | _____ |

Euterpe side-eyed the cage that hung from a hook on the ceiling, glittering gold with what she honestly thought was an unnecessary amount of guilt. Although the bars were thin enough for her to snap them with a press of her claws, the creature inside was not going to get out easily. Floating inside the cage was a series of floating orbs, each one containing a different element. The largest contained a rolling burn of fire, accompanied by a smaller orb of water, and the tiniest contained a crystal of ice. They bumped against each other and the bars, intermittently letting off bouts of steam and energy as they rattled. “Euterpe, are you listening?” Alusair said, starting the young Imperial out of her revery. She groaned at the diagram now on the board, knowing that if she had her druthers it would have made sense, but her mind was too scattered to possibly construe its meaning now. “The creature is there to show you how elements react to each other, not for undue staring. Do you need to watch it a little more to understand?” “No, Mother,” Euterpe sighed, trying to keep her eyes on her mother. She wanted to look at the elemental orbs more, for some reason, although she understood full well how they worked. It was bumping repetitively against the bars now, and when she caught a glimpse of it, she thought maybe it wanted to get out just as much as she did. “I’m too scatterbrained. The words mean nothing- I’m sorry...” She would never get used to the spike of guilt that crossed tutors’ faces when she was able to grasp a task quickly one day and be completely stumped the next. No matter how kind her parents were about it, there was some bit in the back of her head that would always tell Euterpe that it was her fault. Alusair sighed, pacing down the stick of chalk she had been using to scribe the diagrams. “I’m not mad, but I suppose there is no point in keeping you here when the lesson is beyond you. Go play, we can return to this later, perhaps after dinner?” “That would be fine,” Euterpe agreed, but just as she was about to stand up and dash eagerly out of the room, her eyes caught on the cage again. The opposing forces now drifted morosely at the back, the spins of energy they had been giving off now faint wisps. To her, it looked sad. Would it go back to hanging alone in the library, with only curious eyes and shelf upon a which to see? Euterpe narrowed her eyes. If she was in that situation, she’d give anything to get out of it. Maybe she could help. “Mother,” she asked as Alusair turned. “May I take the elements with me?” “The orb set?” The Imperial cast a look at it, confused, and the orbs brightened a little. “You can’t let it out of the cage, or it’ll fly away. Why would you want it?” “It seems lonely. I promise I won’t let it out, just can I carry it around?” “If you want to...” Alusair agreed, and her daughter grinned. With her help, Euterpe took down the chain that the creature was suspended from and tied it around her wings and arms. The chain was thin, and the bottom of the cage rested on the space in between her wings, slotting between the shoulder blades. When she twisted her head around, she could see the opposing elements inside glowing brightly, apparently pleased at this turn of events. “Now remember, no opening the door,” Alusair reminded as she let her daughter go. “Those element creatures are hard to catch even in the best of circumstances. Losing one would be a severe annoyance!” “Yes, Mother!” Euterpe called, already out the door. Alusair smiled and turned back to her cleaning. With her new passenger on her back, Euterpe eagerly galloped through the halls of the Radiant Sect. “I’m gonna show you all the cool places I know,” she called to its cage, and inside, the orbs got even brighter, the elements inside humming with energy. And she did! Euterpe scoured every bit of her mind for the places she liked to frequent- the sandy shores where they played in tide pools, the gardens filled with the flowering heads of a thousand plants, the gilded hallways where sunlight streamed in great squares to fall on the polished marble and they played a game of hopscotch. All through their journey, the opposing forces brightened and began to swirl, humming with happiness as Euterpe earnestly chattered to it. The day ended as the gift of the sun fell behind the hills of the Sunbeam Ruins, and Euterpe and her cargo-turned-friend stopped in the shade of a pillar. She was almost breathless from running so much, but it was a happy breathless, and she reached behind her and untangled the cage from her back, holding it in her paws. Inside, the elements trilled happily, swirling together and letting off curls of steam. Euterpe grinned and placed a claw on the little door that kept the orbs from spilling outside. “You don’t deserve to be trapped in there,” she said, as the forces stilled as if to watch her. “You should be free! I won’t mind if you fly away- my mother might, but you want to see the world just as much as I do. I would- I would like it if you stayed, but it’s up to you.” She threw open the little golden door, and tentatively, like it was afraid she would push it back in, the elements inside crept out. The mist it created swirled around her claws, and then it seemed to strike the creature. It let out a happy trill, and spiralled unexpectedly upwards, bumping against itself in its eagerness. But before it went anywhere, before Euterpe could say anything, really, the elements dipped back down to float next to her, staying resolutely by her side. She looked at it, confused. “Don’t you want to be free?” The orbs bumped against her snout affectionately, and she grinned. “You can stay with me too, if you want.” The orbs hummed in a high-pitched chime, and the pair went to go return the cage. After all, neither of them would be needing it any more.

Settled at the mouth of a shattered open balcony Euterpe felt far more settled than she had all day, her wings flaring once before settling neatly against her back as she sat. The setting sun warmed her scales as she relaxed, the great orb dipping further and further towards a twilight she waited for with excitement. This little excursion, plumbing the cliffside ruins for excitement, had been just what she needed. There were many parts of The Dawn that hadn’t been restored yet fully, that couldn’t be, really, with so much of the cliff face lost to the ocean. But they’d been made safe now, attended to and reinforced, often habitated. Though less so at this time of day. | _____ |

There were books to sort, to read, to study, arts to pursue. Classes to take, tutors to heed. Duties to attend to. But she’d had the day free to herself, and so- Well. Maybe she’d stretched that freedom a little. Leaving the spire and heading down to the cliffs by herself was probably not what anyone intended but, still. “While it isn’t precisely new, my dear, your little excursions still cause Mirach concern,” said a voice from behind her, pitched quietly and almost perfectly mild. Gentle and understanding, as her mothers so often were. Pendelus moved quietly, having entered the cliffside at some other point, and sidled up beside her daughter with gracefully hushed movements. Euterpe didn’t quite startle, but there was a moment of frozen guilt that shattered into shifting in place sheepishly. The older dragoness didn’t sound mad, which, well. They were very tolerant, but she’d become more aware, as she grew into adolescence, of the duties placed on her. Of the fact that both of her mothers struggled under the confines of their own roles, and still performed. That she would need to learn to do the same. “I don’t mean to worry, really. I just-” she said, sighing. “Get so restless,” both she and Pendelus finished at the same time, as the other dragon moved up, seated herself close, looking out over the ocean beside her. Euterpe let out a huff, that lead into a giggle. “Okay, nothing new there. It just, doesn’t go away.” “No, not new. We do understand, dear. Sneaking away is still...less than ideal,” her mother said delicately, not judging her, but not hiding the fact from her. “We’ve been talking, about something that might help. But if this were to happen, though. There would be no sneaking out, on your adventure.” It was said just as mildly as the rest, but Euterpe’s whole body perked up on the word, her wings twitching excitedly just as the sun sank, and twilight truly began. The light changed upon her scales, her wings, shimmering beautifically as she looked over to her mother. “Adventure?” she just avoided chirping it like a hatchling, but it was still mostly undignified. Pendelus had a very gentle smile on her face, tranquil, as she looked out over the ocean. Her mother chuckled quietly. “Yes. An expedition, to continue your education. You do enjoy your lessons far more when carried out of doors. And you are charming, of strong bearing. We’ve been considering a diplomatic forray, under Sion’s guidance, to a friendly clan,” the older dragoness held up a claw to forestall any comments. “It would be good for both of you. You need to learn your way around each other, and he has much he could pass on, a different perspective. And though we won’t be accompanying you, it would hardly be the two of you alone. It would be mostly routine exchange, of course, at first. With a few scribes along with to copy down a few books we find of interest and would like present here. Mirach would accompany. A native or two returning from their study,” the artist continued, calm and focused despite her daughter’s fairly buzzing excitement radiating next to her. “I-yes! Yes, Mother, both of you, thank you. It would,” Euterpe breathed out, stopping herself uncertain of what words to actually choose, of what to even say as she burst out laughing with excitement. “That would be amazing!” Pendelus finally turned to look at her, expression tender and loving as she arched a wing gently over the younger dragon’s body, pulling her close. “There’s no need for that. We want what is best for you, our lovely daughter. The heir to the sect. You would need to go on expeditions like this at least once or twice anyways. But we thought it might be best to start you on them sooner, as much as we prefer to keep you close.” “I won’t let you down. Neither of you. And I’m sure I won’t be gone that long. Just long enough to miss you, and be happy to be home,” Euterpe piped up excitedly, leaning against her mother as her mind whirled around the possibilities. Adventure, exploration. Yes to somewhere other’s had been, with an entourage. But it’d be further from the Spire than she’d ever been without her mothers. Doing work for the clan, learning while traveling it sounded… It sounded perfect, actually. She was ready for it. She leaned there against her mother, enjoying the twilight, for long moments, simply basking in the anticipation of this, of her adventure. Euterpe felt strange, like she was floating on a cloud, when it was her, not Pendelus that said- “We should probably get home. I bet Mom wants to talk to me about this, and see how excited I am, too. Even if she didn’t want to come down to the cliffs. I want to hear everything about where you were thinking of sending me.” Pendelus let out a little amused huff, waiting only a moment before starting to straight. “You will, my dear. You really think we’d have mentioned this without being well prepared?” she asked. Her heir was, however, already tensing, muscles coiling, so she could launch herself off from the balcony, to fly back up to the sept. Laughing quietly, adoringly, the Matriarch followed her daughter, content in their decision. The Viridian Labyrinth was up for exciting times, ahead, she imagined. And so was her daughter.
