Biography
Maia
Lieutenant
Impermanence is not an unfamiliar concept to her, she says, beginning her tale, for she is a child of the stars, born to nomads that chase after the wild magic that sweeps through the land. Underneath the velvet sky, she danced and laughed with all the others, but when a steady hand was needed to guide them on the right path, it was hers that was there, patient and calm. The constellations were her companions at night, when she dreamed of leading her brothers and sisters to a better, brighter world. Although she knew that there was no such thing as forever, she never thought that she would stop chasing the arcane. It was a reality she could not even imagine, even as she contemplated her darkest fears in the dead of night. Home, perhaps, did not exist, awash in a bright blur of runes and enchantments. She thought, though, that everything else would remain the same, constant in her ever-changing world of color and charm. She remembers how her life was tipped off course. How could she not? Sometimes, though, she wishes that she could not recall every detail, the way the blood of her brothers spilled and the way that even the magic could not save them. She tried - oh, how desperately she tried to tame the untameable. Others survived, she knows, but there was nothing left for her in the wastelands, no one left for her to lead. Nothing for her to love, to nurture, to bring order in a disorderly world. So she left, she remembers, with a bitter taste in her mouth and nothing but her sword to guide her. She left, and she stood strong, not knowing what the future would bring her. The only thing she knew was that she wanted a home, to pursue the permanence she knew did not exist, could not exist. Now, when she whispers memories to her mate, a leader of war, she thinks of how long ago that must have been, when she was hunting for something she did not think she could find. Revenge would have been simpler, a blade through the breast of each of the raiders that caused her this pain. There was no justice, though, in revenge. Her brothers, her sisters, the clanmates that she loved - none of them could have been brought back, and so she searched for something different. There is softness in Maia’s eyes as she reveals this to her other half, and Kelsus understands. Neither of them needs to finish. They both know how this story ends. In the end, she is not who she dreamed of, when she had romantic fantasies about flying all the way to the stars. Her sword is more steel than silver filigree, now, and she strikes with duty, with purpose. She has found something she wants to protect from the savagery she once sought, someone she loves so deeply that she understands what it will mean to fight until her dying breath. In Kelsus, and in their clan, she finds the strength to protect the peace she once fled from. Maia knows now that she was not meant to soar amongst the stars, rather, she was meant to impose their order and beauty upon the earth itself, and this, she does not mind. She protects that which she loves, and this is more than she could have ever dreamed of. |
