baronstar.png Backstory baronstar.png

"Up, slackers! A day's ahead!" Major Cathan called into the barrack. "You kids gotta grow up someday, and seeing this is part of that process! Up!" We hatchlings scrambled out of bed and into the rays of the Mirrorlight Promenade. "Today I show you what you will amount to be someday! Follow!" Marching in somewhat straight rows, we ran down to the training fields of the facility. There, many other dragons were training in unison in fighting and discipline. "Lieutenant Bridi! Pause if you will." Major commanded. "As you wish, Major!"
Lieutenant halted his work. The training dragons composed of Mirrors immediately snapped back to position and into four rows of seven columns. Their attention seemed to be focused on a place in front of their noses. Major Cathan turned back to us. "This is what you will sum up o if you become worthy enough! Proud soldiers with a cause to stand by! Take this in your minds and focus on your near future!" Major addressed Lieutenant, returning him to his work. We left the site later and was sent back to our barracks.
When we finally grew of age, we were sorted into groups. It came my turn for sorting, and I entered a room designed for such. Inside was a larger than usual Pearlcatcher with a clipboard and pen in claw. Motioning to a spot in the middle of the room, she said "Stand there." I followed the instructions accordingly. She put her clipboard on a table and grabbed a tape measure. Pen behind her ear, she promptly measured my wingspan and length, thought for a bit, then grabbed her clipboard and scribbled something down. Tapping her clipboard with the pen a few times,
she looked up at me. "Health conditions? Mental conditions? Physical disabilities?" I shook my head no for all those questions. After writing more, she pointed her pen to a large box. "Lift." I grabbed it and lifted it easily, making her take more notes. "Good." She motioned to the center of the room again. "You are in the Guardian collection, medium class, and upper specific." She motioned for me to leave the room and I promptly did so.
About a week later, we were called by Lieutenant General Emory himself to report to the gathering hall. Many did not come as the General had not called. "Congratulations, soldiers! You have passed the tests. Go to your collective specifics. See you on the field." During his brief speech, we were saluting and continued until the General had left. Soon we were commanded to leave and so joined our specifics.
For ten long moons we trained to fight to prepare for the impending full on war. We were taught skill, tactic, and discipline. Soon we were a proud armed battalion, and I had earned the role of Colonel. Our hard labors made us a force to be reckoned with.
Soon wartime came upon us. It was between those of the Beastclan. This uprising was far too strong and was positioned in the middle of the Shifting Expanse. Reports of billions of Beastclan warriors came flying in by the minute. They had been gathering for six moons in an underground hideout unknown to lightning dragons. After building up massive armies, they finally went to war. We went to work at once, as the General of the Army commanded a full on defense of the Carrion Canyon. So, we marched past the border. Many flights had already sent their forces, and the battle already raged. I lead an ambush set to their behinds, cutting down a significant number. The General led his own force beside our ambush in a different wedge nearby. Lightning crashed through the air, shattering the sky and clouds. Electricity jostled the atoms in the air as we fought. Maneuvers and tactics were used to their highest degree, yet we still almost lost the fight.
We had lost many of our soldiers when a lightning bolt of large proportions shattered the ground before us. The Stormcatcher perched on the Tempest Spire, electricity crackling and expanding the air about his wings. He lowered his outstretched arm, with which he commanded the lightning. Spreading his wings, he flew up and landed on the ground by the Beastclans with a trembling of the earth. Our armies knew what was to come next, so we sheltered ourselves behind rocks, wings, and other things to defend us. The Stormcatcher raised his horn and crashed it down to the earth with magic sourced at it.
Lightning filled every bit of the air that was not protected by some kind of wall. Most of the Beastclan were killed in this assault. Just when we thought it was over, the second wave hit. More and more Beastclans poured from the ground, surrounding us. We were left with nearly no more soldiers left to manage as we ended up on the front lines. Calling full retreat, The General brought his soldiers off the battlefield. Many other flights did the same, and other militaries replaced them, as the Second Battle Order did with us. We retreated back to the Hewn City, tending to our wounds and counting our dead. There weren't many of us left, so we fled quickly and unorganized as all battalions were in ruins.
The next day, The General called me to his quarters. "You wanted to see me, sir?" I entered.
"Yes, Colonel Navy. You led a battalion head-on into Beastclan forces, like I instructed, however you did not retreat in time enough. The losses are too great Colonel. What made you think the army could survive such an onslaught? We are trained for battles of soldiers that are equal in strength, not billions of warriors!"
"Sir, you commanded us to attack full-force. Not to let up. I simply followed orders--"
"My command only accounted for the documented Beastclan! When you saw the more in number attack, you were responsible for commanding our armies to retreat!"
"We had eleven armies of soldiers at our backs! We had the strength! We had the power and force, sir! It could have been done!"
"No it could not have! There were billions of them, now we are only left with less than a quarter of our original force!"
This was when I got mad at The General himself. "Sir, your attack was ragged and faulty. The wedge was headed by the weakest dragons, sides even weaker! It destroys the purpose of the wedge. Then, you chose to order your force to surround certain groups. Fighting in that style does not account for those around the circle, killing those participating in your attack. A frontal assault with an organized troop will get much more done, sir!"
The General stood. "Leave at once. If I see your face again in this facility, you will drown in your own blood."
I followed his orders. I trekked out and away in the night, past the guards and past the searchlights of the towers that loomed above. Perhaps at that point I regretted the outburst, but now I do not. I journeyed all the way to the river by nature, setting myself down in the soft grass belowfoot. I did not see what was in the water until the next day. When I awoke, I noticed tiny stars floating by in the river, just going on their way.
For a moon, I stayed at the bed of the river to watch the little dots flow by. I studied what the dots were and what to do with them. For that moon, I was surviving alone, and afterwards I went looking for my own clan along the riverside.
On my path, I encountered a snake. Everyone, including myself, would recognize it as an Onyx Cobra. Seeking not to get bitten and contract gembond, I avoided it. However, when I thought it safe, the cobra sunk its fangs into my skin.
I could feel the gems forming on my body. The color of my tertiary, emerging before my eyes.
At this point the snake was crushed under the power of a claw, but the disease remained. The gems conglomerated over my body, shifting and crackling.
I do not know why it did not hurt. Everyone knows the gems of gembond would cause immense pain, as described by previous victims. However, this was not the case for me. It did, though, start to move upon my hide. That was unusual.
Streaks of another, more teal color began to come onto me. Recognizing the threat, I bolted up the river. This needed to be treated right away, or I may die.
This was the point in the story where I met the Clan of Fallen Dreams, and it is here where I forget exactly what happened. The disease was not removed, but the streaks were surely paused, and the gembond stopped growing. They kept shifting, but this was not harmful. I successfully integrated with the clan, a detail that also slipped my memory as to how, and continued my life.
At some point I ended up becoming the Great Twilight, but how also was forgotten. Maybe the gembond is affecting my memory, or maybe it is just stress.

baronstar.png Act 1.5 baronstar.png

"I can stay here no longer, Twilightscale."
The new clan leader looks into my eyes. "What? Why not? What's wrong?"
"The gembond, I cannot hold it further. A cure must be found, or--" A sharp pain slings into my side like a hot iron of Crimsoneye's forge. "Or I could fall. We've had enough of that in this clan."
"But we need yo--"
"Son, if you aren't ready to lead without me, then I have failed myself and this clan, a curse I need not especially with these gems. Are you sure you're not ready?"
"I--I suppose I can go on alone. But we'll miss you."
"I'll be back. Once I find someone out there to cure me, you can see me once again here on these lands." And without another word from either parties, I leave. I need no other dragons to worry on my whereabouts while I am here, as it would slow my trek to salvation. Twilightscale can break this news when he chooses, a crucial part of being a leader. My part in this clan is far from complete, but this chapter must come to a close.
