"Ooo, a swallowtail..." A quiet dragon who keeps mostly to himself, Malu has loved butterflies since he was a hatchling in the Behemoth in the Viridian Labyrinth - in part because they were so much more colorful than he was. He often wished he could be more like them since he was looked down on for being so dull. Malu chanced upon the island of Prufrock while following a migrating kaleidoscope of butterflies. He carefully observes and records all species of butterflies he sees around the clan's territory. When the wildclaw siblings Bound and Verso came to the island, Malu was surprised to overhear them speak of a coatl who looked rather like him, a coatl named Calamity who had visions of disasters and wandered around Dragonhome with her snapper mate Galeras. Though they had never met her personally (they had been warned to stay away from her), he determined from what little they knew of her that she could only be his daughter, though her name was different from the one he and her mother had given her. He is glad she has found a mate and is no longer alone, though he is a bit regretful that he spent more time studying butterflies than taking care of his only child. Though he had the best of intentions when he received news of his daughter, he still hadn't gotten around to contacting her when a snapper hatchling named Sentis showed up insisting she was his granddaughter. He was a bit dubious of her claim, at first, but she did look a bit like his daughter, excepting that she was a snapper rather than a coatl. Though unsure, he invited her to stay in a spare room in his lair. He forgot to tell her about his terrariums of cocoons, however, and was only reminded of this when he heard her shriek in the middle of the night. She had gotten up for a drink of water and been startled by movement behind the glass - some of the butterflies had emerged and were flapping their wings to dry them. He came out to comfort her as best he could and got quite a shock when he saw that she was bristling with spines that covered every surface of her body. Malu was rather confused as to why his granddaughter had suddenly decided to imitate a porcupine and thought that perhaps the instantaneous development of extra spines as a method of defense was a common snapper trait...something the other snapper in the clan laughed at when told about the incident later. Sentis tearfully explained her curse and that she got like that whenever she was scared and would have to remain spiky until they shed. Malu wished he could give her more comfort, but as she was too prickly to hug, he had to content himself with fetching her water. He has promised to help her research ways to combat her curse and to assist her in avoiding things that scare her. Malu is grateful that though she doesn't like being startled by them, Sentis isn't actually afraid of butterflies. Some time later, Malu was finally given the opportunity to reunite with his only daughter when Calamity came to visit. When she grew restless and withdrawn and began muttering ominously, Malu realized sadly that the visions that had plagued her in youth had never truly gone away and that he is once again powerless to help her. He hopes she can one day find peace, though he isn't sure whether she'll be able to find it on Prufrock with him. |
