"This sword is my friend."

"Hollis is cold and calculating, but not cruel. He has a similar lack of emotion like his father, but he can imitate it fairly well. He is very perceptive and is quite capable of forgeries of masterful quality as well as discerning fakes and the real deal from each other. He has the hands of a surgeon essentially. He has basic training in swordsmanship but greater knowledge in metalworking, fineries like jewelry, and the ability to ornately decorate weapons and the such. He is more in tune with aesthetics than his father who is mostly durability over diamonds. Usability over beauty. They got along professionally and Arnskar encouraged him to walk his own path. Hollis tends to dance on the line of ethics and morality though. Arnskar believes in making your own mistakes and then fixing them yourself." - Zurun

Hollis grew up in the Quarry, training under his father Arnskar in the hopes of also becoming a blacksmith of skill and renown. He learned to tolerate intense heat, to overcome his natural fear of fire, when to strike with force and when delicate skill was required instead. His favorite memory of his time with his father was watching the elder pearlcatcher forge one of his famed soul blades, crafting a sword of exceptional beauty and durability that developed its own personality in parallel to its wielder. Hollis was proud when his father gave him the newly forged blade, even prouder as he learned the blade's name and its abilities. He trained extensively with Senbonzakura, working with the blade as it scattered into small petals of metal which soared through the air and wrecked destruction on anything in their path.

After learning all he could from his father, he decided to forge his own way, stowing aboard a ship called the Slattern at Challenger's Point, avoiding the captain Stern and the others aboard the vessel so that he wouldn't have to pay for his passage. When the ship anchored for a while elsewhere in the Starfall Isles off the island of Prufrock while waiting for two Quarry residents to board, Hollis sneaked off the ship, making his way quietly onto the beach.

He wasn't aware that the island was host to a variety of spirits or that some of the dragon's warriors were keeping an eye on the ship, so though stealthy, his arrival didn't go entirely unnoticed. He was cornered by the coatl swordsdragon Indil and an underworld spirit known as Samedi. The latter claimed to only want rum, but the former questioned what he was doing on the island. Not wanting to be apprehended by the crew of the Slattern and not liking his odds against two unknown potential foes, he scattered his blade to stir up the sand and escaped further into the island's interior, finally coming to rest in a grove of peach trees.

The peach tree spirits were used to hatchlings playing in their grove, but the sword this young pearlcatcher carried made them uneasy, for they saw it as a spirit that had been bound to a blade and were angered at Hollis for his audacity at binding one of their kin and subjecting it to his whim. (It reminded them too much of the staff that a couple of the clan's coatl had destroyed a peach tree and its spirit to create.) The clan's exorcists had meanwhile detected the sword's strange magical signature and arrived in time to intercept and intervene. Hollis and the exorcists were narrowly able to convince the peach tree spirits that the sword was a created spirit rather than a bound one - a kin of sorts to them perhaps, but an artificial variety.

After the ship had sailed off and Hollis was free to explore without fear of discovery, he located the disused, neglected forge in Lantern Port; its bellows had been still since the clan's previous blacksmith had departed after the tragedy of the Barrier Breach. Most of the clan's dragons rejoiced to once again have such a useful craftsdragon, though Hollis' cool manner has won him few friends. This concerns him little, for he would rather be admired for his skill than for his personality. Most of his custom comes from visitors passing through Lantern Port, though a few of the clan's dragons have commissioned him. He worked with the imperial mechanic Genim to create a prosthetic leg for the skydancer Hazelmist. Discovering the imperial's skill at games of strategy, he began to join him, the coatl Iason, and the pearlcatcher Ashes in their gaming sessions, his calculating mind allowing him to keep up with the older dragons and even occasionally best them.

He visits the training arena every so often to spar with the clan's warriors, and in the spring, the metallic petals of his sword's unique ability swirl among the peach blossoms. He more frequently practices solely with Senbonzakura, meditating to further bond with his sword.

With his pragmatic outlook and changeable ethics, he has much in common with the merchant Nathaniel and occasionally works with him on side jobs, though neither trusts the other. Despite being a relative newcomer to the clan, he was elected Lantern Port's representative to the Council of Eleven - the business owners judged him to be the most formidable among them as well as the dragon most likely to advance their mutual goals.

Though he prefers to work alone, he had an assistant foisted on him by scholars eager to get the fire mage away from their flammable notes and texts. Hollis was at first annoyed at being burdened with an accident-prone pyromancer, but he came to realize that Innusha had certain innate advantages that made him useful to a blacksmith - his fire magic could light and maintain the forge and keep the heat consistent throughout the crafting process. Thanks to his magical affinity and his extremely tough hide, Innusha was also able to handle exceptionally hot materials without any protection. Despite his overall usefulness, Hollis rarely allows his assistant to work on the more delicate commissions due to the skydancer's tendency toward clumsiness.
