JOURNEY INTO SNOWSPIRE CAVERNS (2017)

The Start of the Journey

"Look at all these passages," Mobie said in wonderment. "There's so many."

"Yes," Riversplash agreed. "Although I do not have the knowledge of the types of bats, they are still interesting." She stopped for a moment, than said, "This way, to the left." Vidar nodded and turned left, leading the group.

The black Guardian grunted. "We shouldn't worry about little things. What's important is our main objective." He stepped on a loose stone and it skidded away, colliding with other rocks. He suddenly stopped, spreading his wings in front of his comrades.

"Oh? Is there something up ahead?" Mobie asked, while Riversplash peered over Vidar's broad shoulders. "Maybe we shouldn't investigate it. Or something."

"The ground ahead seems quite unstable," Vidar warned. "Perhaps we should try another path."

"Better be cautious, although it doesn't seem like you to say so," Mobie joked. Vidar gave him a slight frown.

"Yes, I can find another path for us," Riversplash said softly, after thinking for a moment. "We should go back to the previous tunnels and take the second right."

"What a wonderful idea!" Mobie exclaimed. "You're really smart!"

Vidar heaved a loud sigh. "Why did you have to choose him? You are the leader of our Clan, so you must know of the wise choices, like Ganix, for instance. He is a powerful warrior."

Riversplash fixed him with a cool gaze. "Mobie has extensive abilities that are useful to a cave exploration. He also has a positive attitude, better than being pessimistic. Now I picked you because of your strength of a strong dragon, who will be able to aid us in any fights. You are strong enough to cover our firepower. Ganix is needed back at the Clan to run business while I am away. I know what you want to do, so I am giving you the chance to lead this expedition."

Vidar stared at the other Guardian for a second, then told her, "You can continue telling us which way to go."

They walked in silence for a few more minutes and came up to a deep trench.

"We should go down there," Vidar decided, leaning over the edge of the abyss perilously.

"You sure? We can't see what's below..." Mobie doubted.

"We will go." Vidar held firm, and the big Imperial dragon gave in. He whispered his spell, and a whirlwind encircled the trio, lowering them to the ground safely. Once they had briefly scouted around for any dangers, they settled down to make camp.

Vidar went out, caught two bats to eat, and found a chunk of mysterious mineral to bring with them. Mobie and Riversplash set up camp, and once they did, Riversplash sat down and took out an empty journal. Vidar came back to find his Clan leader scribbling away in her journal with the green Imperial stretched out next to her.

"Successful hunt," Vidar announced, two dead bats swinging on his claws.

"Thank you, Vidar," Riversplash smiled, pausing her writing. "I am glad you thought for us. However, I will not eat, as both of you have worked very hard. Mobie and Vidar, you two you prevented harm from getting to us. I am quite busy with the log."

Vidar dipped his head. "Very well." He handed Mobie a bat, who said thanks in return.

They rested for the rest of the night.

Day 2: Unusual Botany

The team had woken up, packed their few essentials, then continued on their journey. The day seemed to stretch by as they traveled for what seemed like hours. Riversplash was observing the unusual plantlife growing in the tunnels. Mobie eyed the plants cautiously, but didn't stop Riversplash from poking around at the botany.

"I have a bad feeling about this plantlife," she said. "Plants shouldn't be growing this lively, especially in cold weather."

Vidar shrugged. "I'm not bothered by the cold; I came from the Ice Flight, after all. Perhaps these plants have the same resistance as I do. You may be right, on the other talon; we will go back to another path." He turned around.

"I... don't remember how we came over here in first place." Mobie murmured.

"No worries, I have studied the tunnels in maps back at the Clan," Riversplash chimed, tapping her head. "It's all in here."

Vidar led the group, using Riversplash's knowledge of the tunnels. Soon enough, they came across a massive, peculiarly straight tunnel with rough, ice-coated sides. It measured perhaps 100 meters in width and an equal number in height. He stopped, and slowly turned around, realization sparking in his eyes. "Team? This tunnel... It appears to have been recently dug out. And whatever dug it, seems to have gone that way."

"Strange," Riversplash mused. "What could have done so?"

Mobie touched his head with a wingtip. "I wish to have knowledge of what beast this was, but I don't know." He sighed. "Maybe we should have brought Lily with us. She knows many of the Beastclans."

Tired, the dragons settled in for the night. Riversplash came back with plants, which she shared with the others.

That night, when the others had already drifted off to sleep, Riversplash was scribbling once again in her log.

No records are recorded after this day.

Day 3: Beast Tracks
squidragon wrote:
There was no dawn, and we couldn't be sure of what time it was - or even what day it was - but nevertheless we awoke feeling quite rested. Taking the time to eat a meal and pack up our items, we soon found ourselves up and ready for another day of exploration.

We walked for a couple of hours through these new passages, when we came across a passage with unexpectedly smooth, square walls, as if this were a series of hallways that someone had built once, long long ago. Occasionally there were chambers off of these walls, with doors so small that a larger dragon might not be able to squeeze its way through. Clearly no imperials built this place, but with it so deeply frozen in ice, it was hard to say who possibly could have.

Every once in a while we would pass a mouse or other small animal that scurried around, almost seemingly lost and confused in these tunnels.

It was not long after we had spotted the first creature that Mobie began to grow a bit worried. Something about these animals seemed wrong - very wrong - and he wasn't quite sure what until insisting that we got a closer look at one of the mice. The creature had several large, black tentacles instead of legs (not normal). A different mouse we looked at had three eyes, and five legs. A third was covered in a thick coat of prehensile, wiggling hair.

Taken aback with horror at the state of these creatures, we wondered what could be causing these mutations - and then we noticed the thick coat of dust lining the walls and floors. Of course - it was the dust.

We decided to continue on, but the group was on edge the entire time. We covered our faces with cloth to prevent us from breathing this dust, and slowly made our way through the tunnels.

As we walked, the creatures we encountered became larger and larger, and the mutations more and more drastic. Some beasts were entirely unrecognizable, covered head to do with wiggling black tentacles - almost as if they were living mops. They peered out at us from every corner, watching us, waiting... Until one beast let out a high screech and the strange creatures came pouring out of the walls, biting and clawing at us. We needed to fight back!

Vidar began to claw and bite in every direction, pushing the creatures off of us and squashing them one by one. With each eliminated opponent, another two appeared.

Although we tried our best, there were simply far too many of them. The horde of beasts began to drag us down the passageways at high speeds, picking us up and chattering to each other.

We were carried through many different tunnels and then squeezed through a tiny hole in the wall. It was then that we found ourselves in the most massive room we had yet seen. At the center of this large and round chamber, was a writhing mass of tentacles and eyeballs and teeth. It looked much like the little mutant animals, but it was nearly 200 meters tall, and equally wide. Around it, thousands of tiny version of this similar creature were all feeding a constant flow of various plants and animals to the 'mother.' There were stacks of grasses and plants arranged in nests, where all of these strange and horrible creatures wiggled about.

In that moment, the exact same thing was going through all of our heads 'Great dragon gods what kind of horror is that?!'

As the little creatures carried us straight into the nest, we were, by some miracle, able to wiggle free and run back out through the hole in the wall, leaving the beasts behind.

As we dusted ourselves off and found a good hiding place, we tended to the little cuts and scratches we had sustained. Unfortunately, Mobie was much worse off than the rest of us, having sustained a serious number of bites from the creatures.

Riversplash tended to the wounds, and was fortunately able to do well enough to leave Mobie patched up and ready to continue on.

Glad to be free from the clutches of the tiny beasts, we quickly left this horrible, horrible chamber. The rest of the day was spent getting as far away from this thing as possible. We did not want its little helpers dragging us back there while we slept - not even a little. When we were confident that we were well hidden and safe for a rest, we made our camp, logged our activities, ate our meal, and slept (in shifts, for safety).
