IMPERIAL COUNCIL MEMBER - Civilian Affairs

[ EMPATHETIC | COURAGEOUS| STRONG-WILLED ]

"Flowers are shadowed, the palace darkens,
Birds twitter by for a place to perch;

Heaven's ten thousand windows are twinkling,
And nine cloud-terraces are gleaming in the moonlight.

...While I wait for the golden lock to turn,
I hear jade pendants tinkling in the wind....

I have a petition to present in the morning,
All night I ask what time it is."

- Du Fu

He paces his breath as he waits for the perfect time to speak.
What will the courtroom think? What decision will the Great Emperor make? ...Will they find out about us?

Unaware but determined, he stands up...

"I have a petition to make"

I sighed as I moved the ink dipped brush across the paper. The sun had made its daily round across the sky and the light of the day had given way to an evening alive with the sound of cicadas. I wiped away a bead of sweat, the product of a day spent writing in a stifling room, and adjusted the paper. It was a response to a letter, sent from a nearby province, asking for protection against a group of bandits that had been ravaging the area. The messenger had arrived out of breath earlier in the day, the frantic call for help in town. There’d been a small meeting called, and I had been given the task of telling the worried mayor that reinforcements would be arriving shortly to get rid of any ambitious bandits. Unfortunately, that had only added to my pile of work, which had made my work go into the night. Sighing, I placed down my brush and examined my work. As I was preparing to return to my room for the night, a voice stopped me in my tracks.
“RuanYu.”
It was a warm, familiar voice. I turned around to see the Jade Emperor’s daughter, Xin Jiang. Her pale green hair was tied back and she wore a silken night gown. She gave off a distinct, crisp scent of early spring.

I was surprised to see her here, this late nonetheless. I rubbed the encroaching sleepiness from my eyes as I turned to face her. She rarely appeared near my home, but her beautiful, delicate features were always a welcome sight to see after a day spent laboring.
“Xin Jiang, what a pleasant surprise.”
I gave a smile, approaching her. She was, is, my lover, she had been for many years now. The problem was, I am a member of the high council and she’s, well. She’s the daughter of the Jade Emperor. Our love is strictly forbidden, though that’s never stopped us.

To my surprise, as I examined her face further, her cheeks were wet, red tear tracks running down her face. She quickly averted her gaze downward
“Xin Jiang?” I asked with alarm. She rarely cried, she had little reason too. I put a calm hand on her shoulder, wrapping my other arm around her.
“What- what is it?” I asked. She shook her head and wiped away her tears.
“It's just, father told me today and, oh god, Ruan Yu,” She took a deep sigh and turned to look at me,
“Ruan Yu...I'm engaged.”
At first the words didn't register. Engaged? Surely I’d heard wrong. Me and Xin Jiang had been lovers for years. I felt my heart grow heavy, this couldn’t be happening. I couldn’t lose her.

But then, hadn't I known it was coming. She was a young, beautiful, heiress, it was only a matter of time.
“Engaged?” I asked, not willing to believe it. I had moved my hands from her. She nodded slowly.

“Who?” I was surprised as how shaky my voice was.
“I don't know, he's some nobleman from a province away,” A fresh wave of tears flowed down her face, “Oh Ruan Yu, what're we going to do...”

I began pacing. I couldn't let this stranger take my only love from me. But if it was on the Emperor’s order, I could hardly object. As my eyes settled on the lily blooming on my windowsill, my memory drifted back to that day.

It had been the early days of summer. I had been only a boy, thirteen at most. I was working with my father in his shop at the time, or I was supposed to be. The glaring sun had made me drowsy, and I had snuck off to the main square when he'd had his back turned. I was sitting lazily near a merchant's cart, when I had seen her. A girl, with her hair flowing in long, vibrant, forest green waves. There were flowers braided into it, white lilies, and she was humming to herself. She had been trailed by an entourage of guards, their sheathes shining from their sides. I had felt my heart skip a beat. I had instantly known who it was, Xin Jiang, the Jade Emperor’s, only daughter. That was the first time I saw her and it had stuck with me for years, until we’d received a formal introduction.

“Wait, I have an idea." Xin Jiang whispered.
My eyes flew to Xin Jiang as I snapped back to reality.
“I know a way we can still be together.” Her tone was still somber, but there was something new there. Hope, I realized with a jolt.

“What is it?”
She sighed before speaking again.
“You can make a petition to my father.”
My mouth formed a thin line. Could I? I wasn't noble born, not suited to marry an emperor’s daughter.
“I don-”
“Your his most trusted adviser, he'll listen to you.” There was pleading in her voice. I took a breath,
“I'll- I'll try.”
I'd have to carefully plan my words, but if I played my cards right, Xin Jiang and I could finally be free to express our love. A small smile formed on her face.
“You’ll get him to listen, I know it.”
I gave a smile, squeezing her shoulder. This was going to be a hard journey, but one I was more than ready to undertake.
