Mirabell remembers where she used to live. She remembers her parents and sister, the way her clan could silently communicate. Sometimes, on the darkest nights, she misses them.
This lightning clan is unfamiliar, and though she has her adoptive mother and her coven around her, she can't exactly get used to the many machinations of the canyon. It's where some of her coven members lived, before they all found each other, and for some reason, they've come back. She doesn't complain - that would be rude, and she knows not to be rude - but she allows herself to sulk a little, hidden away in her tower room. Everything is just so loud - so unlike what she's used to, and Heron is often too busy to train her in her sending. It's odd, but surrounded by so many, she feels lonely for the first time in her life. So she seeks out rare pockets of quiet, and finds Mirkwood, with the silence that seems to follow him like a shadow. It's not a peaceful quiet, it's angry, but quiet it is, and right now that's all she needs. She understands that he is Fernflow's - her bonded's, her spell sister's - son, understands that they don't speak, but doesn't exactly understand why. She, afterall, would be overjoyed to see Rosarita again, though she adores Heron. Mirabell supposes that if she wants to know, she will have to ask. She won't yet though, she enjoys Mirkwood's quiet companionship too much, knows that he has a good soul behind his thorny defences, despite what he does to earn his pay. So she keeps to their silence , and learns to cherish it. Mirkwood's first words to her are a quiet 'thank you', and suddenly the silence is calm. |
