The Winds of Reedcleft Ascent

Millenia ago, before there was a Breezen clan, and not long after the most ancient of clans dug their talons into the sparse turf of the Reedcleft and sprang towards the sky, there was Flow. Not in any way recognizable to her chosen family, but a raw, primal power, screaming out her wild nature like the most feral and ornery of creatures. She whisked through the land, carving deep gouges into the earth and flattening even the sturdiest of trees, howling into the sky to prove her superiority.

She and her brother held brutal races, whisking across the clouds like arrows. A a particularly rough play session, her father, the Windsinger, descended to her.
"My dearest canyon wind," he said, "you are far too rough with those who fly near you. All the other dragons in the sky are stripped from their path and blown away wildly wherever you go."

Flow looked at him and said, "So what? Twisting Crescendo rages for seasons on end far fiercer than even I, and you do not ask him to calm his temper. Why must I care?"

"Your brother Twist has great rage and energy in him that he was shaped with. He was no peaceful gift from Fire like you were, and he knows to limit his violence outside his territory. Those who brave his winds do so for their own personal challenge," the Wind Deity reproached. "You, on the other claw, have no respect for those who must fly through your winds and care not if they fail to match your power, whether they have chosen to do so or not."

To this, Flow scoffed and flared her mighty wings, sending the swirling wind around her into a frenzy. "Then why should I calm myself? They clearly are not worthy of the sky if they cannot handle my currents. Why should they deserve the sky when they cannot even fly through my gentlest breezes? Hah! They should be ashamed to call themselves your children if they are so weak!"

The Windsinger looked down at his second oldest child with a grave expression. She gazed back, defiant and irritated, certain she was in the right. He shook his head with a heavy sigh and said, "I have been remiss teaching you. None can match you in speed and ferocity beyond your older sibling, and so you cannot understand what limits are, nor how you impose them upon others. I will right this wrong."

Flow lowered her wings while he talked, and her expression turned wary as the fierce winds around her suddenly began to writhe as if blown about by Twist. She squawked indignantly as she felt her wings shrink away, and her powers diminish. When the winds died down, she fell to the ground, buffered by her father's power, nothing but a small, flightless hatchling.

"You will learn from those you scorn. You will understand their struggle, their hopes and dreams, and why your arrogance is nothing but shameful. You are blind to it. Your pride is your blindfold, and you must remove it yourself. Until then, you have no right to the sky," her father decreed, and before she could wail a protest, he flew off.

For three days, Flow screamed and cursed the sky from which she had been rejected. Her little wings, once grandiose and massive titans that could cut through the sky with ease, now could not lift her even a foot from the ground. At midday on the third, Flow heard frantic wingbeats approaching. She turned and puffed herself up, unwilling to be cowed by some stranger.

Those unfamiliar wingbeats gave way to a spiral, who, even though was lesser for its small wings, was still slightly impressive to her for its somewhat decent agility. "Oh," the dragon said, startled. "Little coatl, where are your parents?" It paused a moment, and then said, "Or are you lost? This is no good. Come with me, maybe we can find them at the crossroads."

Flow, silent and seething, very nearly snarled at the interloper to go crash into the ground. Only the cold thought of yet another freezing night, yelling fruitlessly at the sky, checked her words. This spiral wasn't the smartest - she was clearly far more mature and intelligent that some dumb hatchling that had pathetically lost its parents, too scared to give a good answer - but still...

She had no where else to go. Her usual haunts were places where her newly tiny wings couldn't dream of flying to, let alone the highest of lofty clouds where the Windsinger made his home. This state of affairs was entirely unacceptable. This had to rectified immediately; her dignity would settle for nothing less. It seemed dealing with this curse, either by nullification or fulfilment of the release conditions, whatever those were, had to be her priority from then on. She knew little of curses, however. Perhaps one of those crossroads dragons could point her in the right direction.
