Tourmaline is the eldest brother of his family, a family with a long and proud history of psychic abilities. Naturally, he too inherited these abilities and showed great promise. He eventually inherited his families fortunetelling shop, and used his powers to aid not only his clan, but any dragons who came from all over to see his gift for themselves.

One night while he was closing up his shop, someone snuck in. He was struck from behind and knocked out cold. He awoke later to find himself in a dark forest, partially buried. Brushing the dirt off, he could see bones sticking out of his hands. Scales and flesh had started to fall off him, and his wings had lost their feathers. He was supposed to be dead, but something or someone had prevented him from fully passing. Confused and too scared to face his family, Tourmaline left his clan to go find answers.

After wandering through many different lands, always under the cover of moonlight, he soon came to a caravan. His condition had only been worsening, and he feared how much longer he had left to find the truth. Not wanting to be seen, he stayed under the protection of the thick forests surrounding them. At least, that had been his plan. He hadn't gotten far before running into another dragon. She was a Spiral, dressed in dark clothes. She had noticed him hiding away in the forests, for she too tended to keep to them. She wasn't afraid of him. In fact, she was fascinated.

She led him back to her small tent nestled out in the deeper part of the woods. There was another dragon there, a Skydancer dressed in equally dark clothes. The two of them introduced themselves, the girl was Hexa, and the boy was Nox. They both explained that they kept away from the caravan and offered to help Tourmaline anyway they could. They couldn't bring him back, but together they used their magic to help preserve his body, to prevent him from deteriorating further. They both agreed to let him stay with them, so they could keep an eye on his condition and to also help him find what did this.

Eventually, word of his existence got out to the rest of the caravan. Many were shocked and scared, and called for him to leave. Hexa begged her father and the caravan's leader, Kalira, to let him stay. Kalira allowed him to stay, seeing as he hadn't caused harm so far. So long as he kept out of sight of any visitors. After all, a zombie tends to be bad luck for business. Now Tourmaline travels with the caravan, enjoying the company of his new friends, and hoping to one day find out the reason why he was stopped from death.
