The limits of the body. The wonderings, the ponderings. Does the air have gender? Do the ripples in the pond? Could that be the answer to the ever-moving, ever-shifting expanse that is mind, body, soul? These are some of the questions that Vaiti likes to ask verself when ve stares deeply at ver reflection in the Looking Pond. Ve likes to throw rocks in the water to watch ver body shift and transform. Perhaps the motion is eternal. Perhaps the waves never cease, rolling in endless circles across ver mottled form. Throughout ver life, ve often struggled to fit in anyplace. The other dragons knew their bodies. Matched with the truths dispensed by the elders. This is why Vaiti had to leave. Ve chafed against the rules like a sharp stone against soft flesh. Ve needed a place where ve could question everything. Where ve had room to move and grow. Ve needed someone to listen to ver questions. When ve walked away from ver old clan, the universe brought ver Tesma. Ve took this as a sign that ve was doing the right thing. Tesma helped ver learn that though the wind moves the shadows cast on the rocks, they remain steady. Though the level of the water in the lake ebbs and flows, it’s still a lake. Still whole and magical. Crystalline. Tesma showed ver that ve is sacred– that ve is nature’s best-kept secret. Dragons are beings that can change like the tides. Change is the truth, not conformity. Vaiti loved this lesson most of all.

Tesma splashes water at Vaiti as the two of them crash through the riverbed. Ve giggles, bliss etched into every detail on ver face. Ve can’t imagine life without ver partner. Ve can’t imagine breathing without the freedom and space that Tesma has given ver. The two dragons are inseparable; their bond ever-glowing. The best part, Vaiti thinks, is that they get to grow together. The two of them like to ask joyous questions about gender, just as a way to validate each other and have fun. The questions often go like this:
“Do you feel more like a shadow today, or like sunlight?”
“Do you feel like you have blossoms?”
“Are you a sprout today, or a branch?”
“How are you oriented towards the sky?”
It’s simple and beautiful, just like their life together. Vaiti feels like the luckiest dragon in the world. Before Tesma, ve didn’t know that love could feel so validating. As ve and Tesma explore the world, ve also explores the worlds inside verself, loving and laughing as the sun rises and sets on each day of ver partnership. It’s gorgeous. It’s sacred. It’s everything ve needs. And it’s going to be this way for a long, long time.
