______Vermilion is an incredibly calm, patient dragon - he is, in fact, one of the most level-headed individuals within the Flickering Shadows Clan. As such, many dragons seek his council before making a big decision - Vermilion is responsible for the cancellation of many very destructive (or otherwise harmful) ideas. Due to his generally reasonable and tranquil nature, Vermilion was appointed to be the ambassador between the Fickering Shadows clan any others. His presence brings a certain openness to the table - as it does seemingly anywhere he goes. However, Vermilion's rank is not solely owed to his inherent calmness, but also to his skill in reading body language (and adjusting his own in kind); Vermilion knows how to tell a liar from a truth-teller, a dictator from a peace-maker, a raider from a trader.
______These attributes are likely also why he, inexplicably, befriended Coal before Coal was a part of the clan. Vermilion had found the other one day, while Coal was still searching for open territory (or a clan too weak to resist a takeover); Coal had immediately been poised to attack, but Vermilion chose not to respond in a similar manner, instead relaxing his posture and attempting to initiate a friendly conversation. Confused, Coal shifted, instead, into a simply defensive pose, carefully replying to Vermilion's talk, expecting, perhaps, an ambush of some kind. That ambush never came, however, and Coal slowly began to truly relax in Vermilion's presence, and agreed to come visit the Flickering Shadows' camp. He'd intended to only stay a day or two, to recharge, but "fell victim", instead, to the clan's (namely, Vermilion's) hospitality, being urged into a longer and longer stay, eventually admitting defeat after several years, and officially becoming a member of the clan. Coal may or may not have gotten Vermilion and himself matching neckerchiefs.
